Cultural Survival, an Indigenous-led nonprofit supporting Indigenous Peoples’ rights globally since 1972, is seeking a visionary Director of Advocacy & Communications. This full-time, fully remote leadership role is open to applicants worldwide. The ideal candidate will bring deep experience in Indigenous rights, advocacy, strategic communications, and team leadership within diverse, cross-cultural, and remote environments.

For over 50 years, the organization has supported Indigenous communities in self-determination, cultural expression, and political resilience. Position Overview
The Director of Advocacy & Communications will shape and lead global strategies to amplify Indigenous voices and align advocacy, storytelling, and media with Cultural Survival’s mission. This newly created role will provide strategic oversight of the organization’s Communications, Indigenous Rights Radio, Special Projects, and Advocacy teams. The Director will work closely with the Executive Director and senior leadership to ensure cohesion across all public-facing activities, guiding narratives that support visibility, impact, and community-defined goals.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Vision & Organizational Leadership
- Serve as a core member of the Executive Team, guiding cross-organizational strategies related to advocacy, communications, radio, and special initiatives.
- Integrate Indigenous values and worldviews into all communication and advocacy approaches.
- Shape Cultural Survival’s positions on policy, legislation, and Indigenous rights issues.
Team Management
- Lead and mentor a global team of managers and consultants.
- Foster a collaborative, inclusive culture across departments and time zones.
- Set strategic goals and performance indicators aligned with mission and community input.
Advocacy & External Representation
- Represent Cultural Survival in national, regional, and international spaces, including UN forums, advocacy networks, and donor meetings.
- Build alliances with Indigenous leaders, organizations, and media outlets.
Storytelling & Communications
- Oversee publications such as Cultural Survival Quarterly and Indigenous Rights Radio programming.
- Guide campaigns and narratives that uplift Indigenous perspectives and priorities.
- Ensure messaging contributes to fundraising, donor engagement, and mission visibility.
Resource Stewardship
- Manage departmental budgets and contribute to annual organizational planning.
- Align fundraising communications with community-driven goals.
Required Qualifications
- Proven leadership in Indigenous rights advocacy, strategic communications, or related human rights work.
- Experience managing remote, multicultural teams across geographies.
- Fluency in English and Spanish (spoken and written); knowledge of Indigenous languages or French/Portuguese is a plus.
- Strong understanding of Indigenous governance, FPIC, customary law, and international frameworks such as UNDRIP and ILO Convention 169.
- Demonstrated experience in decolonial, land-based, or movement-led advocacy strategies.
- Commitment to collective care, intercultural respect, and inclusive leadership.
Preferred but Not Required
- Fluency in an Indigenous language.
- Familiarity with digital storytelling, media tools, or grassroots radio production.
- Direct experience working in or with Indigenous communities on advocacy campaigns.
Compensation & Benefits
Cultural Survival offers fair, locally adjusted compensation based on cost of living and experience. Reference salary ranges (USD/year) include:
- United States: $100,000–$132,000
- Canada: $83,000–$109,000
- Mexico: $35,000–$45,000
- Brazil: $31,000–$41,000
- Germany: $71,000–$94,000
- Australia: $89,000–$117,000
