University of Sydney – Australian Government Research Training Program (RTP) and Equivalent Scholarships 2025-2026

The University of Sydney offers a range of competitive Research Training Program (RTP) scholarships and equivalent university scholarships to support high-achieving domestic and international postgraduate research students. These scholarships aim to alleviate the financial burden of higher degree research (HDR) study, while recognising academic excellence and research potential.

These opportunities are open to both commencing and currently enrolled students pursuing a Master’s by Research or Doctorate (PhD) at the University.

Scholarship Programs and Benefits

1. RTP Stipend Scholarship

  • Eligibility: Open to domestic and international HDR students.
  • Award Basis: Competitive.
  • Benefits:
    • $41,753 per annum (2025 rate) tax-free stipend.
    • Relocation and thesis allowance.
  • Additional Info: Students awarded this scholarship are automatically considered for a RTP Fee Offset (if international).

2. RTP Fee Offset Scholarship

  • Eligibility: International HDR students only.
  • Award Basis: Automatically granted with RTP Stipend Scholarship.
  • Benefits:
    • Full tuition fee coverage for up to 14 research periods.
    • Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC).

3. University of Sydney International Stipend Scholarship (USYDIS)

  • Eligibility: International HDR students.
  • Award Basis: Competitive.
  • Benefits:
    • $41,753 per annum (2025 rate) stipend.
    • Relocation and thesis allowance.
    • Students awarded USYDIS are automatically granted the University of Sydney Tuition Fee Scholarship.

4. University of Sydney Tuition Fee Scholarship

  • Eligibility: International HDR students (linked to USYDIS award).
  • Benefits:
    • Full tuition fee coverage for up to 14 research periods.

5. University of Sydney Postgraduate Awards (UPA)

  • Eligibility: Domestic HDR students.
  • Award Basis: Competitive.
  • Benefits:
    • $41,753 per annum (2025 rate) stipend.
    • Relocation and thesis allowance.

Application Process

To be considered for RTP or equivalent university scholarships, students must follow the appropriate process based on their enrollment status.

For Commencing Students:

  1. Submit an application for admission to a higher degree by research via Sydney Courses.
  2. Submit the separate scholarship application form by the relevant deadline.

For Currently Enrolled Students:

  1. Must be enrolled in a HDR program.
  2. Submit the scholarship application form before the deadline listed in the timelines below.
