About the Airbel Impact Lab

Airbel is the IRC’s research and innovation hub, focused on maximizing the impact of humanitarian aid through evidence-based solutions and scalable innovations. The lab delivers tools and programs that are twice as impactful, 10x more scalable, and 20% more cost-effective than existing methods. Through rigorous testing and operational intelligence, Airbel transforms the way aid is conceptualized and delivered.

Role Overview

The Strategic Systems Officer is a key position within the Airbel Impact Lab’s Strategy & Delivery team. The role involves leading the design, implementation, and maintenance of critical internal systems that improve efficiency, knowledge sharing, governance, and operational workflows. A strong emphasis is placed on automation, AI adoption, and cross-functional collaboration.

This is a full-time hybrid position (not open to expatriates), suited for candidates who combine operational insight with strong technical capabilities in Microsoft 365 tools and digital transformation practices.

Core Responsibilities

Systems Design & Implementation

  • Develop user-friendly, inclusive systems that support departmental needs, focusing on efficiency, simplicity, and clarity.
  • Lead pilots of new tools or improvements, managing change readiness and supporting user adoption.
  • Integrate Microsoft 365 features (e.g., Power Automate, Excel scripting) and AI tools to streamline internal operations.
  • Maintain and upgrade existing systems to remain responsive to evolving organizational needs.

Operational Optimization

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify inefficiencies, streamline processes, and reduce redundancy.
  • Ensure critical documentation, file systems, and governance structures are accessible, well-maintained, and aligned with team needs.
  • Develop tools and dashboards for tracking project performance, annual planning, and reporting.
  • Support proposal development systems to reduce administrative burden on technical teams.

Collaboration & Service Orientation

  • Act as a systems liaison to finance, HR, and procurement teams, identifying opportunities for automation and improved coordination.
  • Support knowledge transfer and training across departments, particularly on AI-based tools and automation techniques.
  • Prioritize high-quality service delivery and user support to improve engagement with internal platforms and resources.

Required Qualifications

  • 6–8 years of experience in systems development, operational strategy, or process design, ideally in a global nonprofit or humanitarian context.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft 365 tools, including Power Automate and Excel scripting.
  • Hands-on experience with AI tools and smart automation solutions for business or operational environments.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to engage diverse stakeholders across global teams.
  • Proven ability to manage competing priorities, maintain system clarity, and execute multiple complex projects simultaneously.
  • Exceptional organizational and problem-solving skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Interest or background in humanitarian aid, research methodologies, or innovation-related sectors.
  • Experience in light coding, scripting, or AI integration into daily operations.
  • Familiarity with agile project management and change facilitation principles.

Recruitment Process

The hiring process for this role includes the following steps:

  1. Screening call (30 minutes)
  2. 1:1 Interview with the hiring manager (30 minutes)
  3. Panel interview with a practical assessment (60 minutes)

Compensation and Benefits

U.S.-Based Staff:

  • Competitive salary with annual range of $92,000 to $115,000
  • 20–25 days paid time off (depending on role/tenure)
