Position Overview
ACLED is currently seeking a Brazil Researcher to support its data collection efforts on political violence and protest events across Colombia and Venezuela. This is a remote, part-time consultancy opportunity requiring approximately 30 hours per week. Work may be conducted from any location with reliable internet access. Consultants are expected to submit weekly deliverables, typically on Saturdays or Sundays.
This entry-level role is ideal for individuals with a strong interest in conflict research, Latin American politics, or data analysis.
Key Responsibilities
- Systematically review media sources, NGO reports, international organization publications, and security updates related to assigned countries.
- Identify and record incidents of political violence, protest, and related events into a structured Excel template.
- Ensure the accuracy, consistency, and reliability of all coded events.
- Maintain a focus on holistic and up-to-date coverage of political violence, ranging from demonstrations to armed clashes.
- Work independently to meet weekly deadlines while incorporating ongoing feedback.
Training and Evaluation
Selected applicants will undergo an intensive training program, which includes several coding exercises. Only candidates who demonstrate a high level of accuracy and attention to detail will move forward to the active research phase.
The initial consultancy term will run from July 2025 to June 2026, with the possibility of renewal based on performance and funding availability.

Remuneration
The position offers compensation at a rate of USD $20 per hour.
Required Qualifications
- A university degree in international relations, political science, conflict studies, peacebuilding, international development, or a related field.
- Proven fluency in English and Portuguese (essential).
- Proficiency in Spanish is a strong advantage.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Excel (essential).
- Prior experience with desk-based research.
- Strong time management and ability to work under minimal supervision.
- Keen attention to detail and a willingness to accept and apply feedback.
- Reliable internet access, a functional computer, email access, and a recent version of Microsoft Office.
Preferred Experience and Competencies
- Academic or professional background in conflict research, especially in Latin America.
- Knowledge of political violence trends and key actors in Brazil, Colombia, and Venezuela.
- Experience with media monitoring or coding political violence data.
