Position Overview
Nutrition International is seeking a Global Safeguarding Lead to strengthen and lead its safeguarding efforts across programs and offices globally. The successful candidate will ensure the protection of staff, partners, and the communities served—preventing harm, abuse, exploitation, and mistreatment. This leadership role will guide the implementation of safeguarding policies and practices, embedding them into the organization’s culture, programs, and operational frameworks.
The position will be located in one of Nutrition International’s core offices in Africa. Applicants must have the legal right to work in their preferred location.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership and Framework Development
- Develop and cost a comprehensive Global Safeguarding Framework outlining key roles, reporting channels, and accountability structures.
- Lead the design and execution of an Annual Global Safeguarding Plan in collaboration with Programs, People & Culture (P&C), and informed by internal audits and country assessments.
Policy Alignment and Implementation
- Review and align safeguarding policies with international standards and national legal frameworks.
- Collaborate with P&C to embed safeguarding values and standards into the organizational culture.
- Create practical guidance and minimum standards for policy application across offices and programs.
Risk Assessment and Reporting Mechanisms
- Develop standardized safeguarding reporting protocols that are accessible to vulnerable groups, particularly children and youth.
- Establish clear communication channels to differentiate between internal and project-level safeguarding procedures.
Country-Level Support
- Assist Country Directors and Safeguarding Focal Points in developing contextualized safeguarding plans and protocols.
- Promote localized risk assessments and capacity-building initiatives tailored to country needs.
Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning
- Work with Monitoring, Data, and Learning (MDL), HR, and Security teams to incorporate safeguarding indicators into organizational performance systems.
- Use data to identify gaps, inform decisions, and refine practices.
Capacity Building
- Design and cost a comprehensive safeguarding training strategy based on identified learning needs.
- Promote regular knowledge-sharing and cross-team communication on safeguarding efforts.
Candidate Profile
Required Education and Experience
- Master’s degree or equivalent experience in public health, international development, social work, law, or related disciplines.
- Minimum of 10 years’ experience in safeguarding, child protection, or safe programming in international development or humanitarian settings.
- Significant experience setting up safeguarding systems in African contexts.
Skills and Competencies
- Strong understanding of global safeguarding standards and survivor-centered approaches.
- Expertise in developing training materials and facilitating workshops.
- Ability to navigate and influence diverse cultural and governmental environments.
- Excellent communication, relationship-building, and project management skills.
- Proficiency in English is required; French is highly desirable.
