William and Flora Hewlett Foundation is Seeking a Program Officer for Climate Change Finance and Multilateral Initiatives

The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, a private philanthropic organization established in 1966 and based in Menlo Park, California, is seeking a Program Officer for Climate Change Finance and Multilateral Initiatives. This position is integral to the Foundation’s Environment Program and involves leading and advancing the Climate Finance and Multilateral Initiatives strategy. The role is designed as an eight-year term, emphasizing long-term commitment to addressing climate change.

Key Responsibilities

  • Grantmaking Leadership: Manage an annual grantmaking budget exceeding $25 million, overseeing multi-year forecasting and strategic allocation of funds.
  • Strategic Development: Contribute to the evolution of the 2024–2029 Climate Strategy, ensuring alignment with global climate objectives and emerging challenges.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with grantee partners, philanthropic peers, academics, policy experts, movement leaders, government officials, and other stakeholders. This includes facilitating collaboration and fostering networks to advance climate solutions.
  • Program Oversight: Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of grants and initiatives, ensuring adaptive management and continuous improvement.
  • Representation: Serve as a representative of the Foundation at relevant meetings, conferences, and site visits, highlighting the work of grantee partners and promoting the Foundation’s mission.

Required Qualifications

  • Experience: At least 15 years of relevant professional experience, with a preference for prior grantmaking experience.
  • Expertise: In-depth knowledge of climate change finance, including the role of multilateral financial institutions and the dynamics of climate-related investments.
  • Policy Familiarity: Understanding of international climate policy frameworks, such as the United Nations Climate Convention, G20, BRICS, OECD, and IPCC.
  • Leadership Skills: Proven ability in strategic planning, staff and budget management, and coalition-building for collective action.
  • Communication: Exceptional oral and written communication skills, capable of articulating complex themes to diverse audiences.
  • Integrity: Demonstrated personal and professional integrity, judgment, and commitment to the Foundation’s guiding principles.
  • Travel: Willingness to travel a minimum of 25% of the time.

Compensation and Benefits

The Hewlett Foundation offers a competitive compensation package, including a salary range of $195,000 to $235,000. Additionally, a generous housing benefit of approximately 13% of the base salary is provided annually for the duration of the eight-year term. The position is full-time and exempt.

Work Environment

The position is based in Menlo Park, California. Staff are expected to work from the Foundation’s offices 2–3 days per week, totaling 10 in-office days per month. Travel and remote work arrangements may be accommodated as necessary.
