Movement Communications Specialist (Africa)

Location: Remote (preferably within Africa)

Role Overview:
This position focuses on building bridges and fostering understanding across the Wikimedia movement, with a particular emphasis on the African region. The ideal candidate will be an experienced communicator or community organizer passionate about connecting and collaborating across Africa. Responsibilities include:

  • Developing and executing digital communications strategies, including advising on social media channels and creating compelling content.
  • Overseeing a social media content calendar and collaborating with colleagues to develop digital campaigns that increase global awareness of Wikimedia projects.
  • Monitoring and maintaining social media channels, engaging with followers, and identifying strategic opportunities for engagement.
  • Supporting the development of staff as online thought leaders and creating training materials for Wikimedia community groups.
  • Assisting with rapid response and crisis management to protect the brand’s reputation.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of two years of digital communications experience, with an emphasis on social media copywriting and account maintenance.
  • Experience with various digital communications platforms, audiences, and engagement strategies.
  • Strong verbal and written communication, editing, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a remote, multicultural environment.

Communications Manager

Location: Remote (preferably in the UTC-4 or UTC-5 time zones)

Role Overview:
The Communications Manager will lead communications for advocacy and public policy work, aiming to advance and protect the reputation of the Foundation and its projects. Key responsibilities include:

  • Developing and implementing proactive strategic communications plans aligned with the Foundation’s annual objectives.
  • Crafting messaging for key initiatives and guiding communications approaches.
  • Producing and reviewing a range of communications materials, including press statements, blogs, and newsletters.
  • Building and enhancing core narratives around the impact and benefits of Wikimedia projects.
  • Managing relationships with external vendors and leading media relations efforts.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of eight years of communications and media relations experience.
  • Experience in advocacy, policy, and legal communications, with a track record of developing and implementing cross-channel campaigns.
  • Experience leading crisis and rapid response media efforts.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Ability to work flexibly and balance long-term priorities with urgent needs

Senior Program Officer (Sub-Saharan Africa, French-Speaking)

Location: Remote (must reside in Sub-Saharan Africa)

Role Overview:
This contract position involves supporting the grants cycle and facilitating participatory decision-making for the Foundation’s programs in Sub-Saharan Africa. Responsibilities include:

  • Overseeing the grant proposal processes from start to finish.
  • Managing communications related to the grants cycle and supporting applicants in proposal preparation.
  • Coordinating inputs from staff, committees, and communities following the grants process.
  • Facilitating regular committee meetings and creating detailed public staff assessments of each proposal.
  • Conducting site visits and documenting learning to share with relevant stakeholders.

Qualifications:

  • Experience in grantmaking, particularly in an international context.
  • Experience in nonprofit capacity building and facilitating participatory decision-making.
  • Strong strategic and analytical skills, with creative problem-solving ability.
  • Fluency in French and English, with proficiency in written and spoken communication.
  • Willingness to accommodate scheduling requirements for frequent interactions across time zones.
