The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) is seeking an experienced and motivated Economic Research Consultant to join its Research Department. About the Role

The selected consultant will support ongoing and new research initiatives under the guidance of senior economists and researchers. The role involves handling large datasets, conducting data analysis, preparing visual outputs, and contributing to publications that inform the IDB’s strategic and policy agenda. This is a high-impact position for candidates who enjoy analytical rigor, have strong quantitative skills, and are passionate about advancing development in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage and maintain extensive datasets relevant to economic, social, and public policy research projects.
  • Write code for data cleaning, integration, statistical analysis, and visualization of findings in the form of charts, tables, and figures.
  • Contribute to the preparation of research reports, policy briefs, and academic publications.
  • Conduct comprehensive literature reviews and summarize current research trends.
  • Propose innovative analytical approaches and research directions aligned with institutional priorities.
  • Collaborate closely with other team members to ensure consistency and quality in outputs.
  • Participate in team meetings, planning sessions, and cross-functional collaborations.

Candidate Profile

Education:

  • A bachelor’s degree in Economics, Public Policy, or a closely related field is required.
  • A Master’s degree is highly preferred and will be considered an asset.

Experience:

  • A minimum of two years of progressive experience in economic research, data analysis, or public policy is required.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with data management and statistical tools (e.g., Stata, R, Python) is essential.

Languages:

  • Fluency in English is required.
  • Proficiency in Spanish, Portuguese, or French is highly desirable.

Core Competencies:

  • Strong analytical and quantitative reasoning skills.
  • Ability to synthesize complex information and present it clearly.
  • Excellent organizational and time management capabilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in diverse, multidisciplinary teams.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Applicants must hold citizenship from one of the IDB’s 48 member countries.
  • Applicants must not have immediate family members (up to the fourth degree of consanguinity or second degree of affinity) currently employed at the IDB, IDB Invest, or IDB Lab.
  • Applicants must have valid authorization to work in the United States or be eligible for relocation and visa support offered by the IDB.

Contract Terms

  • Contract Type: International Consultant
  • Duration: Full-time, 12-month contract with the possibility of extension up to 36 months based on performance and project needs.
