Student Energy Career Training (SECT) Program – Cohort 6: Women in Energy Africa

Are you a young woman in Africa eager to build a meaningful career in the sustainable energy sector? The Student Energy Career Training (SECT) Program is now accepting applications for its 6th cohort, which will run from July 2025 to February 2026. This fully virtual, part-time program is designed specifically for women aged 18 to 30 from across Africa who are passionate about driving the clean energy transition.
What is the SECT Program?
The SECT Program builds leadership and career readiness through an intensive 30-week journey that blends energy education, project-based learning, career coaching, and mentorship from industry professionals. Themed “Women in Energy Africa,” Cohort 6 will focus on empowering young women to take leadership roles in the energy landscape of the continent.
Participants will benefit from a comprehensive curriculum that includes:
- Energy Systems 101 and specialized energy topics
- Real-world experience with an industry partner through a practicum project
- One-on-one mentorship with professionals from the energy sector
- Project management, teamwork, and leadership development
- Personalized career coaching and job search support
- Connection to Student Energy’s global network
Program Structure and Commitment
The SECT Program requires a commitment of approximately 10 hours per week from July 2025 to February 2026 (total of ~300 hours). The schedule is broken into three distinct phases:
1. Coursework (Mid-July to Mid-August)
- Participate in the Launch Webinar
- Complete 6 general learning units and 1 assignment on the Learning Hub
- Attend introductory calls with your coach and project team
Estimated time: ~4 hours per week
2. Practicum Project (Mid-August to Mid-December)
- Collaborate with a real industry partner on a team-based project
- Weekly meetings with your project team and industry partner
- Deliver final project presentation and meet deliverables
- Complete 6 specialized curriculum units on the Learning Hub
Estimated time: ~10 hours per week for assignments and meetings
3. Career Development & Coaching (January – Early February 2026)
- Complete 5 career development units
- Attend webinars and personalized career coaching sessions
- Participate in virtual networking and skill-building events
Estimated time: ~4 hours per week
Eligibility Criteria
To apply for SECT Cohort 6, you must:
- Be a woman aged 18–30 years old
- Have African nationality and currently reside in an African country
- Be fluent in English (spoken and written)
- Have reliable internet access
- Be currently enrolled in or have completed a post-secondary certificate, diploma, or degree program
This program is free of charge, fully online, and accessible from anywhere with an internet connection.

- Two short essays (max 250 words each):
- Why do you want to participate in the SECT program?
- What energy topic or skill are you most excited to learn about, and why?
- A 2–3 minute video (uploaded as an unlisted YouTube link) responding to:
- How does the SECT program fit into your current career path and goals?
- Describe a team experience where your contributions led to success.
- Highlight your key strengths, ambitions, and the unique experiences you’ll bring.
- Curriculum Vitae (CV): Max 2 pages, PDF format.
