Kakenya’s Dream is a nonprofit organization working to empower and educate girls in rural Kenya, with the mission to end harmful cultural practices such as female genital mutilation (FGM) and early forced marriage. Through holistic programming that includes education, health, mentorship, and community engagement, we aim to nurture the next generation of female leaders who will drive positive change in their communities and beyond.

We are seeking a Communications Officer to join our dedicated team at our field office in Isampin. The successful candidate will play a key role in shaping and amplifying our message, ensuring that our work and impact are effectively communicated across audiences, both locally and internationally.

Key Responsibilities

1. Strategic Communications & Content Development

  • Support the development and implementation of communication strategies, work plans, and annual budgets.
  • Draft, edit, and disseminate communication content that promotes the organization’s programs and mission.
  • Assist with internal and external communications, including newsletters, publications, and updates for stakeholders.
  • Develop IEC materials, case studies, and multimedia content (photos, videos, audio) that highlight program impact.
  • Collaborate with teams to ensure brand consistency across all communication channels and materials.
  • Contribute to proposal writing and donor reporting by providing relevant communication inputs and visual documentation.

2. Media Engagement & Public Relations

  • Assist in creating content such as articles, briefs, and impact stories for a wide range of audiences.
  • Work closely with program teams to document and share stories, experiences, and lessons learned.
  • Help design visually appealing reports, presentations, and marketing materials.
  • Engage with media houses and support media placements to raise the organization’s profile.
  • Represent Kakenya’s Dream in relevant events and forums, and respond to information requests as needed.

3. Digital Engagement

  • Support the creation and scheduling of content across digital platforms, with a focus on engaging local audiences.
  • Build and maintain a digital content archive, including high-quality visuals and reports that document the organization’s work.
  • Collaborate with the MEL team to share case studies, stories, and lessons in compelling digital formats.

4. Other Duties

  • Carry out other communication-related responsibilities as assigned by the Communications Manager.

Qualifications & Experience

Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or Diploma in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Photography/Videography, or a related field.

Additional Training (Preferred):

  • Postgraduate certifications in graphic design, social media management, or digital media production.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 2 years in communications, preferably in the NGO or development sector.
  • Experience working in rural or community-based settings is an added advantage.

Key Skills & Competencies

  • Excellent writing and editing skills in English and Kiswahili.
  • Strong visual storytelling skills through photography and videography.
  • Familiarity with social media platforms and content management systems.
  • Ability to design and produce multimedia content including infographics and short videos.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills.
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to meet deadlines and work under minimal supervision.
  • Creative, self-driven, and committed to promoting girls’ and women’s rights.
  • Willingness to travel to remote field locations.
