This is a unique opportunity for graduate students and recent master’s or Ph.D. graduates to work at the intersection of geospatial science, communications, and humanitarian response.
The NASA Lifelines program supports the use of Earth observation data to enhance humanitarian assistance and disaster response. Through this fellowship, selected participants will contribute to ongoing efforts that connect scientific research with real-world challenges, helping organizations respond more effectively to crises around the world.
Fellowship Overview
- Program Dates: July 2025 – December 2025
- Duration: 6 months
- Commitment: Part-time (up to 10 hours per week)
- Compensation: This is a paid fellowship position
Fellows will have the opportunity to engage in collaborative projects with NASA professionals and external partners. They will support mission-aligned activities through research, communication, data analysis, and strategic content creation, while developing valuable experience in humanitarian innovation and Earth science application.
Available Positions
There are three fellowship positions available for the 2025 cycle:
- Communications Fellow
The Communications Fellow will help convey the mission and impact of NASA Lifelines to a broad audience. Responsibilities may include writing blog posts and reports, managing digital content, developing visual materials, and supporting external engagement efforts. Ideal candidates will have a background in science communication, journalism, public affairs, or related fields, with a strong interest in Earth science and humanitarian work. - Data Series Fellow (2 positions)
The Data Series Fellows will contribute to the development of the Lifelines Data Series, an initiative aimed at showcasing how NASA Earth observation data is used in humanitarian contexts. Fellows will conduct research, analyze data use cases, and collaborate with experts to translate technical insights into actionable narratives. Candidates should have a background in geospatial analysis, Earth science, disaster response, data science, or a related discipline.

Eligibility
The NASA Lifelines Fellowship is open to:
- Current graduate students (master’s or doctoral level)
- Recent graduates who have completed a master’s or Ph.D. program within the past year
- Candidates with a demonstrated interest in Earth science, humanitarian assistance, disaster risk reduction, geospatial technology, or science communication
Applicants must be able to commit to the full six-month program and work up to 10 hours per week. The fellowship is remote, though occasional virtual meetings or collaborative sessions may be required.
