The Wikimedia Foundation is Hiring a Senior Program Officer (Latin America and the Caribbean, Spanish Speaking) Remote – Latin America Region

About the Role
The Wikimedia Foundation, the nonprofit behind Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects, seeks a Senior Program Officer to oversee and implement regional funding programs serving Wikimedian communities across Latin America. This remote role requires residence in any Latin American country within the Foundation’s approved hiring locations.
At the core of Wikimedia are volunteer contributors curating free knowledge worldwide. The Community Resources team supports these volunteers and affiliated groups through institutional and individual funding, emphasizing inclusion and knowledge equity.
The Senior Program Officer will manage grant processes, support grantees, facilitate participatory decision-making, and contribute strategically to advance the Wikimedia Movement’s goals.
Key Responsibilities
Grant Cycle Management
- Oversee end-to-end grant proposal processes across various funding programs
- Communicate effectively with grant applicants, guiding strategic planning, programming, staffing, board development, and financial management
- Conduct due diligence and eligibility reviews of prospective grantees
- Coordinate with Wikimedia staff, committees, and community members to prepare materials for grant reviews
- Collaborate with Finance and Administration teams to process approvals, disbursements, and data tracking in the grants database
- Evaluate each grant cycle to identify improvements
- Review grantee reports, provide feedback, and share findings with stakeholders
- Hold regular meetings and site visits with grantees to monitor progress and document learning
- Maintain and update grant-related resources on the Meta wiki platform
Facilitation of Grants Committees
- Recruit and onboard committee members
- Facilitate committee meetings and decision-making processes
- Develop and analyze survey tools for proposal assessments
- Prepare detailed staff assessments and financial analyses for committee deliberations
- Respond to committee inquiries regarding proposals and data
Strategic Contributions
- Evolve the program in alignment with Wikimedia Foundation priorities and the 2030 Movement Strategy
- Identify and engage potential grantees through networking
- Apply knowledge of free knowledge ecosystems and volunteer communities to maximize program impact
Required Skills and Experience
- Strong knowledge of trust-based philanthropy or community grantmaking
- Experience with participatory decision-making structures
- Proven experience in international grantmaking
- Background in nonprofit capacity building (as funder, consultant, or leader)
- Excellent strategic thinking, analysis, and creative problem-solving skills
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines
- Demonstrated success building partnerships with communities, stakeholders, and fund seekers
- Effective facilitation skills within volunteer-driven or decentralized communities
- Open, transparent, and inclusive communication style
- Experience managing complex projects and diverse stakeholders
- Ability to work flexibly across multiple time zones
- Fluency in written and spoken English and Spanish, including public speaking and written communications
- Commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion principles
- Residence in Latin America within the approved hiring countries
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working with online communities and the free knowledge movement
- Passion for or prior contribution to Wikipedia/Wikimedia projects
- Proficiency in Portuguese is a plus

Compensation and Hiring Locations
- Salary range for U.S.-based applicants: $80,183 – $122,025 USD annually, adjusted based on location and experience
- Hiring locations include numerous countries across the Americas, Europe, Africa, and Asia (full list provided above)
- Non-U.S. hires are employed via local third-party Employer of Record (EOR) services
