Matsumae International Foundation Research Fellowship Program 2026

The Matsumae International Foundation (MIF) is inviting applications for its 2026 Research Fellowship Program. This initiative aims to contribute to international academic cooperation, cultural exchange, and the peaceful development of global society by supporting young researchers who wish to conduct research in Japan.
About the Foundation
Founded in 1979 by Dr. Shigeyoshi Matsumae, the MIF is a private, non-profit organization based in Tokyo. The Foundation’s mission is rooted in Dr. Matsumae’s vision of building a peaceful and secure world through scientific collaboration, education, and cultural exchange. His life and career as a pioneering engineer, Minister of Communications, educator, and advocate for peace shaped the philosophy that drives the Foundation today.
MIF’s guiding principle is that mutual understanding through academic and cultural exchange lays the groundwork for enduring international friendship and world peace.
Fellowship Purpose
The fellowship program aims to:
- Provide opportunities for promising young researchers from around the world to conduct academic research in Japan.
- Promote cross-cultural exchange and foster deeper understanding of Japanese society and values.
- Build long-term professional and cultural links between Japan and the fellows’ home countries.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must meet all the following conditions:
- Non-Japanese nationality
- Ph.D. holder (at the time of application)
- Age 45 or younger (born in or after 1980)
- No prior long-term stay in Japan (short-term visits like conferences or tourism are acceptable)
- Proficient in English or Japanese
- Employed in their home country and committed to returning to contribute to its development
- Must secure acceptance from a host institution in Japan before applying
Applicants must also empathize with the MIF’s principles and objectives.
Research Fields
Preferred disciplines include:
- Natural Sciences
- Engineering
- Medicine
However, research topics are open and should be agreed upon between the applicant and their host institution in Japan.
Fellowship Duration
The fellowship runs for six months, anytime between June 2026 and March 2027. Applicants must clearly specify their desired start and end months on the application form.
Number of Fellowships
Approximately 15 fellowships will be awarded for the 2026 cycle.
Host Institution
Fellows may choose any appropriate host institution in Japan, such as:
- Universities
- National research institutions
- Private sector research facilities
Applicants must secure written acceptance from a host professor or scholar prior to applying. MIF does not assist in this process.
Fellowship Benefits
- Monthly stipend of JPY 220,000 to cover research and living costs
- Arrival allowance of JPY 120,000
- Round-trip airfare (economy class) from the nearest international airport
- Overseas travel insurance with medical and death coverage
- Cultural study tour organized by MIF to explore Japanese traditions, technology, and perspectives on peaceful use of science
Conditions
- Fellowship is limited strictly to the specified period and individual grantee.
- Family members or companions are not covered by the program.
- Immigration and accommodation arrangements for dependents are not supported by MIF.

- Curriculum Vitae and List of Publications
- Recommendation Letter from current employer
- Ph.D. Certificate (with English translation if not in English)
- Letter from Host Professor/Scholar in Japan (on institutional letterhead, signed)
Incomplete applications or those submitted outside the designated period will not be considered.
Selection and Results
- Applications are reviewed by the MIF Screening Committee.
- Results will be announced on the MIF website in late November 2025.
- Successful applicants will receive a formal grant letter.
- MIF will not respond to inquiries about individual selection outcomes or committee deliberations.
