Chemonics is seeking a Food Security Analyst (FSA) to support the USAID-funded Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWS NET), a leading global initiative dedicated to providing reliable early warning and analysis to prevent food insecurity and famine. Operating since 1985, FEWS NET delivers actionable insights on the location, causes, and magnitude of food insecurity, working to strengthen sustainable response capacity at local, national, and international levels.
Chemonics has managed the FEWS NET project since 2000, with the current eighth phase (FEWS NET 8) launched in 2024. This role is part of the Food Security Decision Support Group (FS-DSG) within the FEWS NET Data and Science Team, supporting global early warning analysis and capacity-building efforts.
Position Overview
As a Food Security Analyst, you will:
- Analyze and synthesize data on conflict, climate, market trends, nutrition, and livelihoods to deliver timely, high-quality early warning and decision-support products.
- Collaborate with field and regional teams to provide country-specific and global insights into acute food insecurity conditions.
- Help build capacity among FEWS NET staff and partners through technical support and training.
This is a remote, U.S.-based position with domestic and international travel expected (security permitting). The analyst will report directly to the Deputy Food Security Decision Support Advisor (D-FSDSA) or their designee.
Key Responsibilities
- Produce and support FEWS NET’s suite of early warning products, including:
- Food Security Outlooks and Updates
- Alerts and Briefs (e.g., Food Assistance Outlook Brief)
- Targeted Analyses and Technical Reports
- Regional Monitors and Ad Hoc Briefings
- Interpret food insecurity severity using the Integrated Phase Classification (IPC) system, or alternative globally comparable metrics when IPC standards are not applicable.
- Contribute to estimating populations in need of humanitarian food assistance in supported countries and regions.
- Deliver timely and actionable technical briefings to USAID, U.S. Government agencies, and other stakeholders.
- Support contingency planning, rapid response efforts, and real-time monitoring of emerging crises.
- Provide technical assistance in food security-related fields such as agricultural economics, nutrition, climate, and livelihoods.
- Conduct field visits for on-the-ground assessment and data validation (when feasible and necessary).
- Contribute to the development of guidance tools and resources on early warning and decision support processes.
- Support capacity-building efforts through workshops and collaborations, particularly in the IPC/Cadre Harmonisé forums.
Qualifications and Skills
Required:
- Minimum 3 years of relevant experience in food security analysis, early warning systems, or related areas.
- Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent experience) in a relevant field such as:
- Agricultural Economics
- Agronomy
- Nutrition
- Climate Science
- Social Geography
- Anthropology
(A Master’s degree or higher is strongly preferred.)
- Strong analytical skills and ability to synthesize large datasets using both quantitative and qualitative methods.
- Excellent writing, editing, and communication skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
- Strong collaboration skills with remote and field-based colleagues.
Preferred:
- Experience working with UN agencies or NGOs in food security or humanitarian contexts.
- Knowledge of IPC and/or Cadre Harmonisé (CH) methodologies.
- Familiarity with ArcGIS, Adobe Creative Suite, or statistical software.
- Language skills in French, Spanish, or Arabic are strongly preferred for analysts supporting relevant regions.
Compensation and Benefits
- Salary range: $65,100 – $81,400 USD annually, based on qualifications and experience.
