Position Overview
ProPublica is seeking a Senior Editor to oversee and elevate the investigative accountability journalism produced by its national reporting team. This role involves supervising a group of reporters producing revelatory, high-impact investigations, shaping ambitious projects, and nurturing reporters’ professional growth. The ideal candidate is a seasoned journalist with a strong editorial vision, sound news judgment, and a deep commitment to accountability journalism.
Reporting to the Deputy Managing Editor, National, the Senior Editor will juggle diverse investigative projects, provide high-level story guidance and line editing, and collaborate across departments including data, research, video, and audience engagement.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervise national reporters working on important, revelatory investigative projects.
- Guide reporters in conceiving and executing ambitious and creative story ideas.
- Support story selection focused on potential impact and help reporters overcome challenges during investigations.
- Edit stories for structure, logic, and quality of writing to elevate the final product.
- Facilitate collaboration among reporters and other newsroom teams, including data visualization, research, audience engagement, and multimedia staff.
- Serve as a champion and advocate for accountability journalism within the newsroom and beyond.
Qualifications and Experience
- Minimum of five years’ experience in accountability or investigative journalism.
- Proven leadership in managing or leading complex investigations, either as a reporter or editor.
- Demonstrated experience supervising employees and fostering their development.
- Strong collaboration skills, both internally across teams and with external partners.
- Exceptional organizational abilities to handle multiple responsibilities, deadlines, and pressures while maintaining composure.
- Broad editorial expertise with the ability to manage and innovate across various investigative formats including long-form narratives, multipart investigations, rolling investigations, and multimedia projects.
- Excellent interpersonal skills to support reporters through challenging, career-defining projects.
Compensation and Benefits
ProPublica offers a competitive salary range of $150,000 to $195,000, depending on experience, accomplishments, and location. The role is full-time and includes a comprehensive benefits package. ProPublica is committed to equitable pay and does not impose career salary caps.
