Are you a recent graduate with a keen interest in international relations? Do you want to understand how a diplomatic mission operates and represents the European Union’s interests abroad? The Delegation of the European Union to Kenya invites motivated young professionals to apply for a six-month funded traineeship in the Political, Press and Information Section.
This is a valuable opportunity to gain first-hand experience in a diplomatic setting, engage in political research and media relations, and contribute to the EU’s public diplomacy efforts in Kenya.
About the Traineeship
The EU Delegation to Kenya serves as the primary link between the European Union and the Republic of Kenya. It represents the EU’s political, economic, and development interests while promoting EU values such as democracy, human rights, and the rule of law.
As a trainee in the Political, Press and Information Section, you will work alongside experienced staff and contribute directly to the Delegation’s external relations and media engagement efforts.
Key Responsibilities
During the traineeship, your main tasks will include:
- Supporting the Political, Press and Information Section in daily operations and strategic planning
- Monitoring and analysing political developments in Kenya under the guidance of the Political Adviser
- Contributing to political reporting and briefing documents on key issues affecting EU-Kenya relations
- Engaging with local media and assisting with public diplomacy initiatives
- Updating and managing the Delegation’s website and social media channels in coordination with the Press and Information Officer
- Assisting with the design and production of communication materials
- Compiling daily and weekly press reviews on relevant national and regional developments
- Assisting in the preparation and documentation of meetings, including taking minutes
- Performing other related tasks as needed
Eligibility Criteria
To qualify, candidates must meet the following requirements:
- Hold a university degree (Bachelor’s or higher) in international relations, political science, African studies, journalism, communication, security studies, trade relations, or a related discipline
- Demonstrate a strong interest in European foreign policy, African affairs, and EU external relations
- Possess strong analytical, research, and writing skills
- Have excellent command of written and spoken English
- Be a team player with good interpersonal communication and organisational skills
- Show motivation, reliability, and a commitment to learning and professional growth
Desirable Qualifications
While not mandatory, the following will be considered a strong advantage:
- Familiarity with the EU’s external action policies, particularly in Africa
- Experience in journalism, media monitoring, or digital communications
- Proficiency in French or Kiswahili in addition to English
Financial Support and Practical Information
Each selected trainee will receive a monthly grant to help cover living expenses. However, the trainee is responsible for covering all other related costs, including:
- Travel and relocation expenses
- Visa and residence permits (if applicable)
- Health, accident, and repatriation insurance
Traineeships are subject to compliance with local and EU regulations, and applicants must meet the legal conditions to reside and train in Kenya.
For citizens from EU Member States, proof of adequate health coverage, including pandemic protection and repatriation insurance, will be required.

Selection Process
