Position Overview
Plan International Egypt is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Project Specialist to lead the implementation of the SWEET (Strengthening Women Entrepreneurs in Egypt) project. This pivotal role focuses on advancing gender-transformative approaches to empower women and adolescent girls in the carpet and handmade crafts industries in Giza, Egypt. The specialist will provide strategic and technical guidance, ensuring the project aligns with women’s economic empowerment goals and contributes to lasting impact in the target community.
Key Responsibilities
- Strategic Leadership: Provide high-level strategic and technical guidance to the implementation of the SWEET project, ensuring alignment with gender-transformative approaches and women’s economic empowerment objectives.
- Gender-Informed Interventions: Conduct thorough analysis of the socio-economic environment, design and monitor gender-informed interventions, and ensure the project activities are responsive to the needs of women and girls.
- Capacity Building: Develop and implement capacity-building initiatives to enhance the skills and knowledge of women entrepreneurs, enabling them to thrive in the carpet and handmade crafts industries.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Enhance partnerships with stakeholders, including local communities, government entities, and development partners, to foster collaboration and support for women’s economic empowerment.
- Policy Advocacy: Advocate for gender equality and women’s economic rights, contributing to policy innovation and creating an enabling environment for women entrepreneurs.
- Resource Mobilization: Support resource mobilization efforts to secure funding and resources necessary for the successful implementation of the project.
- Monitoring and Evaluation: Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of project activities, ensuring continuous improvement and achievement of desired outcomes.
Qualifications and Experience
- Educational Background: A Bachelor’s degree in Economics, Business Administration, Management, International Development, Gender Studies, or related fields.
- Professional Experience: A minimum of 3 to 5 years of experience in program development, policy analysis, and strategic planning in the field of gender and economic empowerment.
- Technical Expertise: Proven experience in designing and implementing gender-transformative interventions, capacity-building initiatives, and stakeholder engagement strategies.
- Knowledge of Local Context: Familiarity with the socio-economic environment in Egypt, particularly in the Giza governorate, and understanding of the challenges and opportunities for women entrepreneurs in the carpet and handmade crafts industries.
- Language Proficiency: Fluency in English is required; proficiency in Arabic is highly desirable.
Project Overview
The SWEET project is a five-year initiative (April 2020 – December 2025) funded by Global Affairs Canada. It adopts a three-pronged, rights-based, and gender-transformative approach to empower women and adolescent girls in the carpet industry in the Giza governorate of Egypt. The project aims to:
- Expand knowledge and understanding of the sector among women and adolescent girls.
- Improve their social status by providing a range of industry-relevant skills.
- Strengthen governance systems and business linkages to build a supportive social and institutional environment for women entrepreneurs.
The project directly benefits 3,100 women over 19 years of age and 1,900 adolescent girls (ages 15-18). Additionally, it targets 945 men and 1,500 boys through male engagement interventions to address gender-specific barriers to women’s entrepreneurship and create an enabling environment for women’s economic empowerment.
