Overview

Leiden University invites applications for a fully funded PhD position focusing on gender-related violence, with particular emphasis on femicide the killing of women due to their gender. This position addresses critical knowledge gaps by integrating empirical research and developing theoretical frameworks to understand and combat gender-based violence in the Netherlands.

Research Focus

The PhD project aims to deliver a comprehensive analysis of lethal and non-lethal violence against women in the Dutch context. Key research questions include:

  • What is the nature and prevalence of femicide in the Netherlands?
  • What patterns and risk factors characterize gender-related violence?
  • How do these patterns compare internationally?
  • What evidence-based policy and intervention responses are effective?

Using a mixed-method approach, the candidate will analyze existing data from the Dutch Femicide Monitor, law enforcement, judiciary, and media sources, alongside newly collected qualitative data such as interviews and case studies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct original research and produce a PhD dissertation on gender-related violence.
  • Collect, analyze, and interpret quantitative and qualitative data.
  • Publish findings in academic and non-academic outlets.
  • Organize and present at workshops, conferences, and seminars.
  • Participate in teaching activities within the Minor Violence Studies and related courses.
  • Engage actively in the academic community of the Institute of Security and Global Affairs (ISGA).

Institutional Context

The PhD candidate will join the Research Group Violence & Violence Prevention at the Institute of Security and Global Affairs, Faculty of Governance and Global Affairs (FGGA), Leiden University. Situated in The Hague—the international city of peace and justice—ISGA employs a multidisciplinary approach to security and violence research, collaborating with local and international partners. The Research Group integrates insights from sociology, criminology, psychology, public health, and policy studies to design evidence-based interventions to reduce violence.

Candidate Profile

Ideal candidates will:

  • Hold a (Research) Master’s degree in Criminology, Sociology, Gender Studies, Psychology, Public Health, Crisis and Security Management, or related fields.
  • Demonstrate fluency in English and Dutch.
  • Have strong skills in both qualitative and quantitative research methods.
  • Possess substantive knowledge and a commitment to addressing gender-based violence.
  • Be capable of independent work as well as collaborative teamwork.
  • Show a willingness to contribute to teaching and participate in a multidisciplinary academic environment.

Employment Details

  • Full-time position (1.0 FTE), initially a one-year contract starting 15 October 2025, renewable for three years subject to evaluation.
  • Monthly gross salary between €2,901 and €3,707 (scale P).
  • 29 vacation days, holiday allowance (8%), and end-of-year bonus (8.3%).
