IPPF’s Africa Region (IPPFAR), headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya, focuses on increasing access to SRHR services for youth, men, and women across sub-Saharan Africa. IPPFAR works closely with civil society organizations, governments, the African Union, regional bodies, and the UN to strengthen political and financial commitments to SRHR. The organization supports 42 countries through a network of Member Associations, strategic partners, and volunteers.

Role Summary

This position supports IPPFAR’s SHIFTS Project through strategic communications and advocacy. The Youth Communications and Advocacy Associate will play a key role in creating, managing, and disseminating content, promoting youth leadership, and driving visibility for the project and its partners.

This role is designed for individuals under 25, reflecting IPPF’s commitment to youth leadership in SRHR.

Key Responsibilities

Communications:

  • Draft and edit media statements, case studies, blog articles, success stories, and bulletins related to the SHIFTS Project.
  • Support internal and external communications across various platforms and formats, ensuring compliance with project branding guidelines.
  • Assist Member Associations in gathering communication materials including photos, videos, and written stories, and provide technical support as needed.
  • Archive all communications materials related to the SHIFTS Project systematically.
  • Develop content for the ARO website and social media platforms to showcase project progress and impact.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to identify communication angles, story ideas, and content for social media campaigns.
  • Contribute to the planning and execution of project-related communication campaigns.

Advocacy:

  • Demonstrate a commitment to social justice, youth empowerment, and community-driven change.
  • Translate communication materials into effective advocacy tools.
  • Support local NGOs and grassroots movements in national-level advocacy and capacity-building efforts.
  • Engage with issues related to SRHR, LGBTQI+ rights, gender justice, and opposition to SRHR in hostile environments.
  • Contribute to the development of creative strategies and advocacy approaches in low- and middle-income country contexts.

Desired Profile

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Recent graduate with a degree in communications, advocacy, media, or a related field.
  • Some experience or strong interest in content development, storytelling, media, or social media campaigns.
  • Skills in photography, video creation, and producing visuals for digital storytelling.
  • Familiarity with web content production or web development is an asset.
  • Fluent in English; knowledge of French or Portuguese is a plus.

  • Strong attention to detail, self-motivated, and capable of producing high-quality outputs.
  • Comfortable using online and virtual platforms, with awareness of accessibility needs.
  • Demonstrated interest in continuous professional development.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and time management skills.
