APRI Seeks Green Tech Senior Fellow to Lead Research on Technology Transfer and Sustainable Development in Kenya: Apply by June 13, 2025

The African Policy Research Institute (APRI) invites applications for the position of Green Tech Senior Fellow based in Nairobi, Kenya. This unique opportunity is designed for an experienced policy researcher with a deep interest in green technology, trade, and investment issues within the African context.
The successful candidate will spearhead APRI’s research initiatives focused on advancing technology transfer and sustainable development strategies in Kenya, playing a pivotal role in shaping evidence-based policies that support the country’s green transition.
Position Overview
Starting from July 1, 2025, APRI will engage a full-time Senior Fellow on a 12-month consultancy basis. This position is located in Nairobi, offering a front-row seat to some of the most critical developments at the intersection of technology, trade, and environmental sustainability on the continent.
The Senior Fellow will lead comprehensive research efforts related to green technology transfer, trade policies, and investment flows that facilitate Kenya’s sustainable growth. Through rigorous analysis, stakeholder engagement, and policy formulation, the Fellow will contribute directly to Kenya’s ability to harness innovation and build resilient, low-carbon economies.
Key Responsibilities
The appointed Senior Fellow will be tasked with:
- Conducting In-Depth Research: Undertake extensive empirical and policy research on the mechanisms of green technology transfer in Kenya, including barriers, opportunities, and best practices. This includes examining trade and investment patterns, intellectual property frameworks, and regulatory environments affecting the green tech sector.
- Engaging Stakeholders: Facilitate meaningful dialogue and collaboration among key stakeholders, including government agencies, non-governmental organizations, industry leaders, and academic institutions. The Fellow will act as a bridge between research findings and practical policy action, ensuring alignment with Kenya’s national priorities.
- Developing Policy Recommendations: Synthesize research findings into clear, actionable policy recommendations that can guide Kenyan policymakers and development partners in fostering a supportive ecosystem for green technology adoption and diffusion.
- Supporting Policy Implementation: Provide technical support for the implementation of policies and programs, contributing to monitoring, evaluation, and refinement of strategies as required.
- Organising Consultations and Knowledge-Sharing Events: Lead the design and execution of consultations, workshops, and seminars that disseminate research insights and promote knowledge exchange among diverse actors engaged in green technology and sustainable development.
Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate will possess:
- Advanced Academic Qualifications: An advanced degree such as an LLM, PhD, JD, or equivalent in disciplines related to trade law, economics, intellectual property rights (IPR), environmental policy, or related fields. Expertise in African trade and technology transfer issues is highly desirable.
- Substantial Research and Policy Experience: At least eight years of professional experience in research and policy analysis, particularly in areas related to trade, investment, technology transfer, or sustainable development. Experience working within or closely with African policy environments will be considered a significant advantage.
- Strong Quantitative and Analytical Skills: Demonstrated ability to design and execute complex quantitative and qualitative research, with a track record of producing rigorous and impactful reports.
- Effective Communication and Leadership Abilities: Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential, with the capability to present complex research in an accessible manner to diverse audiences. Proven leadership in managing collaborative projects and engaging multiple stakeholders is expected.
- Autonomy and Collaboration: The candidate must be able to work independently, manage deadlines, and lead multi-stakeholder initiatives effectively while contributing to a collaborative institutional culture.
