Position Summary

The Audience Engagement Manager will spearhead strategies to deepen audience engagement and expand the reach and impact of the Pulitzer Center’s content across multiple digital platforms. Working collaboratively with global teams, this role oversees newsletters, social media, digital campaigns, and audience metrics to ensure alignment with organizational goals and audience needs.

This position requires strong stakeholder management, including communication within the Communications team, collaboration with other departments at the Pulitzer Center, and partnership with journalists, educators, and external stakeholders. The Audience Engagement Manager will design and maintain audience engagement frameworks that enable the communications team to effectively convey the Pulitzer Center’s mission and impact. Additionally, the manager will lead digital communications staff, ensuring optimized workflow and output.

Key Responsibilities

Audience and Digital Strategy

  • Lead the organization’s cross-platform audience engagement strategy, covering newsletters, social media channels, and websites.
  • Integrate audience-centered communication strategies to optimize digital platforms with clear segmentation and personalized content delivery.
  • Develop and execute digital communication work plans aligned with global storytelling objectives and support the Communications Director in shaping overarching communication strategies.
  • Manage and mentor the digital communications team to enhance social media engagement and follower growth.

Newsletter and Content Management

  • Define and implement the Pulitzer Center’s newsletter product strategy, ensuring high engagement and content relevance.
  • Establish and maintain digital metrics tracking systems to monitor strategy execution and measure audience growth and engagement.
  • Analyze user behavior and platform trends to identify key partners and collaborators, optimizing audience engagement strategies through data-driven insights and actionable recommendations.

Campaign and Partnership Support

  • Support internal teams and editorial partners in developing audience impact strategies and creating audience-centric communications materials to enhance partnerships and fundraising efforts.
  • Oversee digital campaign strategies across the Pulitzer Center’s four regional hubs: United States, Latin America, Southeast Asia, and Africa. Support regional teams with localized campaign planning and execution.

Agency and Advertising Management

  • Manage relationships and contracts with external agencies, ensuring alignment with campaign goals and budget.
  • Oversee the Center’s digital advertising strategy, including paid media campaigns designed to raise audience awareness, generate leads, and support fundraising initiatives.
  • Launch, optimize, and report on paid media campaigns that promote journalism and educational content.

Qualifications and Experience

The ideal candidate will demonstrate a strong background in audience engagement, digital marketing, or communications, preferably within journalism, nonprofit, or media sectors. They should possess:

  • Excellent communication and project management skills.
  • Proven leadership experience with the ability to inspire and manage teams effectively.
  • A passion for journalism, education, and leveraging storytelling to create social impact.
  • Expertise in digital campaign strategies, including email marketing and social media management across platforms such as Instagram, YouTube, LinkedIn, and TikTok.
  • Proficiency in newsletter tools and strategies, such as Mailchimp or HubSpot.
  • Knowledge of paid media tools and SEO principles to optimize audience reach.
  • Strong analytical skills with experience in audience research, A/B testing, and metrics reporting.
  • Fluency in written and spoken professional English.
  • Preferred language skills in Spanish, Portuguese, French, or Bahasa Indonesian to support global engagement.

Location and Work Hours

This is a fully remote position. The Pulitzer Center encourages applications from candidates based in Latin America, Africa (especially near the Congo Basin), and Southeast Asia. The role requires availability during hours overlapping with the Washington, DC office’s standard business hours (EST/EDT) to facilitate collaboration.

Compensation and Benefits

For non-US-based employees, compensation is based on an established philosophy considering local market rates and includes paid leave for local holidays, vacation, sick, parental, and bereavement leave. Health and retirement benefits are not provided outside the US. The Center values work-life balance and supports flexible working arrangements.
