Overview of the Scholarship Program
The South Asia Institute (SAI) at Heidelberg University, in collaboration with the Max Weber Forum for South Asian Studies Delhi (MWF Delhi), is launching a prestigious fellowship program. This initiative targets young scholars from South Asia specifically India, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh who aim to build and strengthen research collaborations with SAI.
Eligibility and Research Focus
The program invites applications from early-career researchers, ideally within three to five years post-doctorate. It is particularly open to scholars specializing in disciplines such as:
- Ethnology
- History
- Political Science
- Economics
- Geography
- Modern Languages and Literatures of South Asia
- Cultural and Religious History of South Asia
Candidates with research projects that can evolve into third-party funding applications or exchange and event programs are especially encouraged to apply.
Fellowship Details
- Duration: Up to three months, starting October 2025
- Location: Heidelberg, Germany
- Purpose: Fellows are expected to develop a research project into a grant proposal or exchange program during their stay.
- Participation: Active involvement in scientific events hosted by SAI is mandatory throughout the fellowship.
Financial Support
The fellowship offers comprehensive financial support including:
- Reimbursement of international travel expenses up to EUR 1,500
- Coverage of rental accommodation costs in Heidelberg
- A monthly stipend of EUR 1,200
Application Requirements
Applicants must submit all materials in English as a single PDF file to [email protected] by 4 June 2025. Required documents include:
- Cover Letter: Maximum one page
- Curriculum Vitae: Including a full list of publications
- Doctoral Certificate: Copy of the most recent doctoral degree
- Project Description: Up to 2,000 words outlining the proposed research and funding plan
- Referees: Names and contact details of two referees who can provide references
Selection Process and Additional Support
The selection will be finalized by the end of June 2025. The South Asia Institute will assist successful candidates with visa procedures if necessary.
