National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) is calling all Mentors and Mentees For Mentorship Program 2025

Transforming South Africa’s Engineering Landscape Together
The Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA), in collaboration with the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), the Transport Education Training Authority (TETA), and Apex, is proud to announce the launch of a nationwide campaign aimed at accelerating the professional registration of Black engineering practitioners across South Africa.
This initiative is more than a campaign it is a movement designed to empower, uplift, and transform the future of engineering in the country. By supporting Black candidates, technologists, and technicians through the formal registration process, we are taking a vital step toward building an inclusive and representative engineering profession that mirrors the diversity, talent, and potential of our nation.
Why This Matters
Professional registration is a critical milestone in the career development of any engineer. It validates technical competencies, opens doors to leadership opportunities, and builds credibility both locally and internationally. However, South Africa continues to face persistent disparities in professional registration, particularly among Black engineering practitioners. These gaps not only hinder career progression but also limit the industry’s ability to benefit from the full spectrum of skills and perspectives that South Africa has to offer.
This campaign responds directly to these challenges by making professional registration more accessible and achievable for Black engineers across all categories be they candidates working toward registration, technicians in industry, or technologists seeking recognition and growth.
Our Objectives
The core goals of this national initiative are to:
- Close the professional registration gap for Black engineering professionals.
- Increase the number of registered practitioners from historically underrepresented groups.
- Foster greater diversity and inclusion within the engineering sector.
- Build capacity and create sustainable pathways for career advancement in engineering.
- Promote professional excellence and recognition for all engineering practitioners, regardless of background.
By supporting professional registration, we aim to strengthen not only individual careers but also the broader integrity and innovation capacity of the engineering profession in South Africa.
Who Should Participate
We invite the following groups to take part in this groundbreaking campaign:
- Black engineering candidates pursuing registration in any of ECSA’s recognized categories.
- Technicians and technologists currently working in industry but not yet registered.
- Recent graduates in engineering-related disciplines looking to understand and begin their registration journey.
- Employers and organizations seeking to support staff members in achieving professional registration.
- Industry stakeholders who believe in transformation, diversity, and capacity building in engineering.

This is not just about meeting minimum standards. It’s about building a community of professionals who are equipped, recognized, and empowered to contribute to national development and global engineering challenges.
A Message to Employers and Industry Leaders
This campaign offers a unique opportunity for employers to support transformation within their organizations. By encouraging and facilitating professional registration for Black engineers, employers enhance their teams’ qualifications and demonstrate commitment to equity and talent development.
We call on engineering firms, government departments, SOEs, and private sector companies to become champions of this cause by identifying potential participants, providing resources, or partnering with NSBE and ECSA to drive greater impact.
Together, We Build the Future
Transformation in engineering cannot wait. The time to act is now.
Help us build a future where engineering in South Africa reflects the full diversity and talent of our nation, a future in which every qualified practitioner is empowered to achieve professional excellence.
Let’s work together to ensure the engineering profession is inclusive, representative, and ready to meet the challenges of tomorrow.
