About Chayn
Chayn is an award-winning, open-source feminist collective using technology to support survivors of gender-based violence globally. Founded in 2013, Chayn provides trauma-informed, multilingual resources that are survivor-led and openly accessible. With a strong commitment to intersectionality, the organisation designs digital tools and services that help women and marginalised communities reclaim safety and healing.
Over 500,000 people have accessed Chayn’s resources, which include practical guides, research, and Bloom a remote trauma support service delivered through partnerships with platforms like Bumble and Badoo. Uniquely, up to 70% of Chayn’s volunteers are survivors themselves, ensuring authentic, lived-experience leadership across its work.
Operating as a fully remote team across time zones, Chayn combines grassroots insight with digital innovation to address tech-facilitated abuse and challenge systems of oppression. It is one of the few feminist organisations producing open-licensed content and tools focused on ending online and offline violence against women and gender minorities.
Project Overview
Chayn is initiating a long-term, open research project to build a cultural map of what “intimate” means around the world. The first segment of this project will focus on Pakistan and its diaspora, aiming to understand how cultural contexts influence perceptions of intimacy and image-based abuse (IBA). The findings will inform advocacy, policy, and digital platform guidelines.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct Interviews: Carry out at least 10 interviews with IBA experts and 20 interviews with women and gender minorities in Pakistan or the Pakistani diaspora.
- Organize Workshops: Facilitate three online workshops with survivors of IBA to gather qualitative data.
- Data Analysis: Analyze and synthesize interview and workshop data to identify themes and insights.
- Reporting: Prepare a comprehensive report reflecting the findings, to be shared with the internal team and potentially published.
- Collaboration: Work closely with the Head of Movement Building and Policy, who will provide support in identifying interviewees and questions.
Required Qualifications
- Experience: Minimum of 5 years in qualitative research, with a focus on gender-based violence and trauma-informed methodologies.
- Cultural Competence: Experience working in the Global South and across diverse cultural contexts, with a deep understanding of intersectionality and systems of oppression.
- Research Skills: Proven ability to design and conduct research projects, including data collection, analysis, and reporting.
- Language Proficiency: Fluency in English; proficiency in Urdu or other languages spoken in Pakistan is advantageous.
Desirable Attributes
- Technical Skills: Experience with multimedia research outputs, such as film, photography, and storytelling.
- Facilitation Experience: Ability to facilitate online workshops and create inclusive research environments.
- Digital Literacy: Familiarity with digital tools and platforms for remote research and communication.
