About the Organisation
The Business & Human Rights Resource Centre is a UK-registered charity with a global team spanning over 30 locations. The Centre is dedicated to advancing human rights in business by promoting corporate accountability, climate justice, and the elimination of corporate abuse. Through strategic programmes, the Centre aims to:
- Advocate for shared prosperity and societal equity.
- Ensure corporate duty of care for human rights and environmental justice.
- Create safe and enabling environments for communities and workers to advocate for their rights.
The Centre’s work encompasses four priority programmes: workers’ rights in global supply chains, responsible natural resource use and a just energy transition, accountable digital technologies, and the protection of human rights defenders.
Position Overview
The Corporate Legal Accountability Research Assistant will support the Centre’s Corporate Legal Accountability and Western Europe programmes. Key responsibilities include:
- Research & Analysis: Conducting legal and regulatory research on corporate legal accountability, focusing on human rights due diligence regulations and strategic litigation trends.
- Portal Development: Assisting in the creation of a new portal tracking remedies for human rights harms through developing and implemented regulations.
- Reporting: Contributing to the Centre’s Quarterly Update on business and human rights legal trends and other established products.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Supporting consultations with key stakeholders and disseminating research findings.
Essential Skills & Experience
- Legal Expertise: Demonstrated experience in legal and regulatory research, particularly in the field of corporate legal accountability and human rights.
- Analytical Skills: Ability to present complex information succinctly and accurately for diverse stakeholders.
- Knowledge of Regulatory Frameworks: Familiarity with global regulatory frameworks for business and human rights, including the EU Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (EU CSDDD) and domestic initiatives in key jurisdictions.
- Experience: Minimum of 2 years in corporate legal accountability, human rights law, or global policy.
- Education: LLB, LLM, Juris Doctor, or equivalent qualification.
- Language Proficiency: Fluent in English (reading, writing, speaking). Additional languages such as French, German, or Spanish are advantageous.
- Communication Skills: Strong writing and verbal communication skills.
- Commitment to Values: Demonstrated commitment to business and human rights, aligning with the Centre’s ethos.
- Team Collaboration: Experience working in high-performing, multicultural, and international teams, with the ability to collaborate effectively in remote, interdisciplinary, and culturally diverse environments.
- Organisation & Initiative: Ability to work efficiently, independently, and methodically, with strong prioritisation skills and self-motivation.
Compensation & Benefits
- Salary: £16,200–£19,200 per annum, adjusted for location.
- Annual Leave: 14 days/year plus bank holidays, and 5 days for office closure in August and year-end.
- Work Schedule: Part-time (21 hours/week), with flexibility to accommodate CET time zone overlap.
- Remote Work: Fully remote position, requiring at least 4 hours of overlap with CET time zone per day.
