InTent Internship Programme 2025 (IIP): Paid Internship Opportunity with Green-Up Gambia

Location: Remote with optional field exposure in The Gambia
Duration: June – September 2025
Format: Hybrid (primarily remote)
Compensation: Paid Internship
Sector: Climate Innovation, Carbon Markets, Bioeconomy

About the Host Organization – Green-Up Gambia

Green-Up Gambia is a pioneering environmental organization focused on clean-energy solutions and sustainable development in West Africa. Through its initiative, Green Solutions, the organization transforms agricultural waste into biochar and briquettes—technologies that reduce deforestation, improve air quality, and promote a circular economy. With growing recognition across climate and development networks, Green-Up Gambia is preparing to scale its impact by entering the voluntary carbon market and exploring high-value applications for biochar, including its potential for medical-grade use.

Internship Overview – Biochar Innovation & Carbon Removal Strategy

Green-Up Gambia is seeking a motivated intern to support its carbon removal strategy and business development efforts as it expands biochar production. This role is ideal for a Master’s or PhD student with expertise in sustainability, carbon finance, bioengineering, or a related field, and who is eager to contribute to a high-impact nature-based solution.

As an intern, you will work closely with the Green Solutions team to explore carbon sequestration opportunities, assess industry standards, and assist in strategic planning. You will play a key role in positioning the organization within emerging carbon markets and contributing to long-term sustainability initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct targeted research on carbon certification frameworks and medical-grade biochar standards
  • Analyze the carbon sequestration potential of biochar against international benchmarks
  • Develop a roadmap for scaling biochar production across The Gambia
  • Identify relevant regulatory agencies, partners, and funding opportunities
  • Assist in drafting funding proposals, strategic reports, and stakeholder communications
  • Provide recommendations to enhance production quality and environmental impact
  • Deliver a final report and presentation with actionable strategic insights

Candidate Profile

We are looking for candidates who meet the following qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a Master’s or PhD program in Environmental Science, Sustainability, Bioengineering, Agricultural Sciences, Carbon Finance, Business Administration, Forestry, or Economics
  • Demonstrated research and analytical skills, particularly in biochar applications, carbon markets, or sustainability metrics
  • Familiarity with climate policy, regenerative agriculture, or sustainability standards is highly desirable
  • Proactive, independent, and solution-oriented, with the ability to manage tasks remotely
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English
  • Previous experience in climate innovation, environmental impact assessment, or grassroots sustainability initiatives is an asset

Why Join This Internship?
This opportunity offers valuable hands-on experience in one of the most promising areas of climate innovation: nature-based carbon removal. You will:

  • Contribute to the scaling of a real-world solution to deforestation and carbon emissions
  • Gain practical insights into the intersection of sustainability standards, policy, and entrepreneurship
  • Work alongside a dedicated team committed to circular economy solutions in West Africa
  • Receive professional mentorship and contribute meaningfully to ongoing projects
  • Participate in international climate forums and collaborative strategy development
  • Enhance your knowledge of carbon credit mechanisms, bioeconomy innovation, and policy advocacy

In addition, all selected interns will participate in the InTent Internship Kick-Off event in mid-July and attend the Geneva Summit in late September, where they will connect with fellow interns, mentors, and global sustainability leaders.
