Innovate Durban invites passionate and driven innovators to apply for our 2025 Start-Up Support Programme a 12-month accelerated mentorship initiative aimed at transforming ideas into impactful, market-ready solutions. This program is designed to support early-stage innovators whose work addresses local economic challenges, especially within KwaZulu-Natal.

About the Programme

The Start-Up Support Programme is tailored for individuals and teams who are committed to driving local economic development (LED) through innovation. This initiative focuses on equipping participants with the necessary tools, mentorship, resources, and exposure to take their innovations from ideation or pre-prototype stages to viable, sustainable solutions ready for market implementation.

Through structured mentorship, expert-led training, and practical assignments, participants will gain insights into the innovation lifecycle, business model development, market entry strategies, and community-focused problem-solving.

What is Innovation in Local Economic Development (LED)?

Innovation in LED refers to the use of technology, creative problem-solving, and novel approaches to address pressing local economic challenges. By applying innovative thinking to community-specific issues, the programme stimulates economic activity, fosters entrepreneurship, generates employment opportunities, and encourages inclusive economic growth in under-served or disadvantaged areas.

Who Should Apply?

We welcome applications from aspiring and early-stage innovators who meet the following criteria:

  • South African citizens
  • Aged 18 years or older
  • Residing within the province of KwaZulu-Natal
  • Individuals or teams with innovative solutions in the ideation or early development stage
  • Innovations must target clearly defined local economic issues or challenges
  • Female innovators and persons with disabilities are strongly encouraged to apply

This programme is not just about ideas it’s about action. Selected participants must be prepared to engage fully in the 12-month programme, including attending all training workshops, completing assignments, and participating in mentorship and coaching sessions. To apply visit here.

Programme Commitment: What’s Required

  • Duration: June 2025 to May 2026
  • Time Commitment: Participants must commit to regular participation in scheduled programme activities and demonstrate consistent engagement throughout
  • Assignments and Milestones: Completion of programme-related deliverables is mandatory
  • Attendance: A minimum of 80% attendance is required to be considered a programme graduate

Commitment Fee: Terms and Conditions

Participants who are accepted into the programme are required to pay a R1000 commitment fee. This fee is intended to ensure dedication and active participation in the programme. However, this fee is fully refundable upon successful completion of the following conditions:

  • Consistent attendance (minimum 80%)
  • Completion and timely submission of all programme assignments
  • Full participation in mentor sessions, workshops, and related activities

Failure to meet the outlined requirements may result in forfeiture of the refundable fee.
