REACH was launched in 2010 and supports crisis response with three core services: needs and situation assessments, satellite imagery analysis, and database and mapping services.

ACTED has operated in Kenya since 2007, delivering humanitarian and development support in response to natural disasters, displacement, and service gaps. With a capital office in Nairobi and field operations in Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASAL), ACTED partners with local authorities to implement programs in water, sanitation, hygiene (WASH), food assistance, and disaster preparedness.

REACH Kenya, active since 2016, enhances the capacity of humanitarian actors with critical data and analysis, focusing on refugee intentions, IDP profiling, multi-sector needs assessments, and durable solutions in vulnerable regions.

Role Summary

The REACH Senior Assessment Officer (SAO) will lead the planning, execution, and follow-up of assessments across Kenya under the guidance of the REACH Research Manager. The SAO will ensure assessments are methodologically sound, well-coordinated, and strategically aligned with REACH objectives. The position involves team supervision, partnership liaison, and strategic contributions to programming.

Key Responsibilities

Assessment Design and Implementation

  • Develop and implement assessment methodologies and analytical frameworks tailored to humanitarian priorities in Kenya.
  • Coordinate field teams to ensure consistent and high-quality data collection and analysis.
  • Track and manage assessment schedules and workflows, adjusting plans as needed in collaboration with field and research teams.

Reporting and Communication

  • Draft accurate and timely reports and factsheets with inputs from HQ and partners.
  • Assist in writing donor reports and strategic proposals alongside the Project Development Officer.
  • Lead the review process for lessons learned and monitoring and evaluation (M&E) matrices across all assessments.

Team Management and Capacity Building

  • Supervise and mentor junior assessment staff, overseeing their professional development and day-to-day work planning.
  • Support recruitment processes for new assessment team members.
  • Foster a collaborative, high-performing team environment with strong cross-departmental coordination.

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Represent REACH externally in sectoral working groups and humanitarian coordination meetings.
  • Maintain and update stakeholder contact lists and ensure targeted dissemination of assessment outputs.

Required Qualifications and Skills

  • Master’s degree in a relevant discipline (e.g., Humanitarian Studies, Social Sciences, Development Studies, Statistics).
  • At least three years of experience in humanitarian contexts in roles involving operational research, food security, nutrition, or coordination.
  • Demonstrated expertise in designing and executing assessments, managing teams, and producing analytical reports.
  • Proficiency in statistical software (e.g., R or SPSS), Microsoft Office Suite, and project management tools; GIS knowledge is a plus.
  • Strong communication skills in English, both written and oral.
  • Ability to operate independently and in diverse, multicultural settings.
  • Familiarity with humanitarian coordination mechanisms and donor expectations.
