About the Role

CIVICUS is seeking a dynamic and highly motivated Multilingual Communications Officer for a maternity cover position. The individual will play a key role in ensuring that CIVICUS’s communications are accessible to audiences in a variety of languages. The core languages for this position are English, Spanish, and French, with additional languages considered an advantage.

The Multilingual Communications Officer will be responsible for managing and ensuring consistency across all multilingual platforms, including the CIVICUS website, digital channels, social media, advocacy materials, and media outputs. This role is critical in enhancing the global reach of CIVICUS, ensuring that our messages resonate with diverse audiences, and promoting civic engagement through well-crafted, accessible communications.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Multilingual Content Development & Translation:
    • Oversee the translation, editing, and transcreation of content to ensure accuracy, clarity, and consistency across languages (English, Spanish, and French) for website content, social media, media outputs, and advocacy materials.
    • Ensure that content is culturally sensitive and engaging for diverse linguistic audiences, especially in relation to global south contexts.
  2. Managing Multilingual Digital Platforms:
    • Lead the management of multilingual platforms, ensuring that content on CIVICUS’s website and digital channels (including social media platforms) is up to date, accessible, and engaging in the relevant languages.
    • Oversee the optimization of the multilingual website for accessibility, ensuring that all materials are easily navigable and readable in multiple languages.
  3. SEO & Digital Engagement:
    • Implement SEO best practices for multilingual content to maximize search visibility across languages and regions.
    • Collaborate with the digital and communications teams to ensure that content is optimized for online engagement and visibility in diverse linguistic markets.
  4. Content Strategy and Storytelling:
    • Develop and maintain a content strategy for multilingual audiences, ensuring the consistent delivery of compelling stories that resonate with global audiences in the target languages.
    • Craft and edit stories that are culturally relevant and compelling, ensuring that each piece of content delivers CIVICUS’s mission effectively to different communities.
  5. Collaborative Work with Internal Teams:
    • Work closely with the advocacy, campaigns, and media teams to ensure alignment in messaging and tone across multilingual platforms.
    • Provide language expertise and cultural insights to various teams to inform content creation and strategy.

Key Requirements:

  • Educational Qualifications: A degree or diploma in communications, translation, linguistics, international relations, or a related field is required.
  • Language Proficiency: Fluency in both written and spoken English, Spanish, and French is essential. Proficiency in additional UN languages or languages from the Global South will be considered a valuable asset.
  • Experience:
    • At least 2 years of experience in strategic multilingual communications within advocacy, international development, or civil society.
    • Proven experience in editing, translating, and transcreating content for advocacy purposes.
    • Experience managing multilingual digital platforms, including websites and social media.
  • Skills:
    • Strong writing, editing, and storytelling abilities to engage multilingual audiences.
    • Familiarity with SEO best practices for multilingual content.
    • Strong IT skills, including experience with content management systems (CMS), translation software, and digital content production tools.
    • Graphic design proficiency (Adobe Creative Suite) is a plus.
    • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and meet tight deadlines.
    • Excellent organizational skills with a keen eye for detail and accuracy.
