About Latvian Literature
The Latvian Literature Platform invites professional translators from around the world to apply for its Translation Grant Programme. This initiative aims to promote Latvian literature on a global scale by supporting high-quality translations of literary works into various foreign languages.
Organized by the International Writers and Translators House (IWTH) and administered by Latvian Literature, the programme supports translations of Latvian prose, poetry, journalism, drama, children’s literature, and other creative genres. It provides financial backing for translators committed to introducing Latvian literary excellence to new audiences worldwide.
Programme Objective
The primary goal of the Latvian Literature Translation Grant Programme is to ensure that the most distinguished Latvian literary works are accessible to international readers. By funding quality translations, the programme helps spread Latvian culture, history, and perspectives beyond national borders. The initiative supports both the translation process and fosters collaboration with foreign publishers interested in showcasing Latvian literature.
Who Can Apply?
The programme is open to professional translators who meet the following criteria:
- Must have prior translation experience and be capable of delivering high-quality work.
- Must translate into their native language (mother tongue).
- Must have obtained permission from the copyright holder of the original work to carry out a complete translation.
- Must provide proof of intent or a publishing agreement from a foreign publisher confirming interest in publishing the translated work.
Applications must be based on a complete and full translation of a literary work—not partial translations or individual excerpts. Translations that are already completed are not eligible for funding under this program.
Eligible Genres
The programme supports a wide range of literary genres, including:
- Prose: Novels, short stories, and literary fiction
- Poetry
- Children’s and Young Adult Literature
- Drama
- Journalism (literary or long-form)
- Comics and Graphic Novels
- Non-fiction: General interest books, memoirs, essays, and narrative non-fiction
Priority Considerations
To maintain the highest standards and cultural relevance, applications will be prioritized based on:
- Commissioned Translations: Works for which a foreign publisher has already expressed interest in publishing the translation.
- Award-winning or Nominated Works: Books that have been nominated for or received significant literary recognition in Latvia, particularly those recognized by the Annual Latvian Literary Award (LALIGABA) or similar national and international awards.
- High Literary Merit: Quality of the original work, based on literary style, originality, and thematic relevance.
Funding Details
The grant amount is calculated according to the type of work being translated:
- Prose: 19 EUR per 1,800 characters (including spaces)
- Poetry: 2 EUR per line
This model ensures fair compensation based on the scope and complexity of the work.
Evaluation Criteria
Applications will be assessed by a panel of experts based on the following:
- Literary Value: The significance and originality of the work in Latvian literature
- Translator’s Experience: Proven ability to deliver quality translations; previous published translations are a strong asset
- Language Proficiency: The translator should translate into their native language for optimal fluency and clarity
- Publishing Viability: The proposed translation should have a realistic path to publication, including confirmed or potential collaboration with a foreign publisher
- Translation Quality: Sample submissions will be reviewed for style, accuracy, and alignment with the tone of the original work
Required Documents
Applicants must submit a comprehensive application package that includes:
- Completed Application Form: Fully filled and signed
- Sample Translation:
- For poetry: 70–200 lines
- For prose: 5,000–10,000 characters (with spaces)
- Curriculum Vitae (CV): A resume highlighting past translation projects, published works, and language proficiency
- Permission Document: A signed agreement with the copyright holder (or their legal representative) authorizing the translation
- Publisher Confirmation: A letter of intent or a signed agreement from a foreign publisher confirming interest in the translated work
