Project Engagement Manager, Africa

Save the Children Denmark is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Project Engagement Manager to join their Africa team. This position plays a key role in supporting the design and management of impactful projects, ensuring compliance with donor requirements, and fostering collaborations with country offices in Africa to address the needs and rights of children.

About the Role

The Project Engagement Manager will be part of the Africa team at Save the Children Denmark, working closely with colleagues to manage Save the Children International’s country office projects. The role involves ensuring effective project implementation, compliance with donor requirements, and monitoring progress towards achieving project goals. As part of the broader team, the Project Engagement Manager will also oversee the use of the Award Management System, providing guidance and support to staff and ensuring adherence to donor agreements.

This role is dynamic and multifaceted, offering opportunities to work across various programmatic areas, help manage donor relations, and support the documentation and communication of results.

Key Responsibilities

The Project Engagement Manager will be responsible for a range of activities, including but not limited to:

  • Project Cycle Management Support: Collaborating with country offices to support all aspects of project cycle management, ensuring that initiatives are aligned with donor requirements and organizational standards.
  • Monitoring and Reporting: Tracking progress towards achieving project objectives, ensuring that milestones are met, and capturing lessons learned for future projects.
  • Compliance and Quality Assurance: Overseeing contract compliance and ensuring that all reports, funding proposals, modification requests, and correspondence with donors meet quality standards.
  • Award Management: Providing support to team members on the Award Management System, ensuring that all relevant processes are followed and maintaining accurate records of projects and funds.
  • Budget and Financial Management: Reviewing and understanding project budgets, ensuring that financial accounts are in order, and advising on any necessary adjustments.
  • Donor Relations: Assisting with the management of donor relations, including the development of funding proposals, visibility plans, and communication strategies to showcase the impact of projects.
  • Risk Management: Identifying and raising potential programmatic risks to the Senior Country Engagement Managers and Head of Region.
  • Communication and Visibility: Supporting the creation and dissemination of project-related communication, ensuring that the work of Save the Children Denmark is effectively represented and shared with relevant stakeholders.

Your Profile

The ideal candidate for the Project Engagement Manager role will possess:

  • Educational Background: A graduate-level university degree in a relevant field or equivalent qualifications.
  • Project Management Experience: Demonstrated experience in managing donor-funded projects, including compliance and contract management. Experience with project support and donor compliance is essential.
  • Sector Knowledge: A background in sectors such as education, child protection, mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS), climate change, and local leadership is highly desirable. An understanding of the conditions affecting children and youth in Africa is crucial.
  • Financial and Budget Management: Ability to develop, analyze, and revise budgets and financial accounts.
  • Proven Writing Skills: Superior English writing skills with a proven track record of preparing quality proposals, reports, and other donor communications.
  • Experience with Donors: Previous involvement with donors, particularly Danida and EU donors, is an advantage.
  • Multilingual Abilities: Knowledge of Danish and/or French is a plus, though not required.
  • Personal Qualities:
    • Strong relationship-building skills, able to collaborate with diverse stakeholders.
    • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to simplify complex issues and engage audiences effectively.
    • Motivated to inspire and guide colleagues while sharing best practices and technical solutions.

Desirable Experience and Skills

Additional experience that would be an advantage:

  • Previous experience working or traveling to country offices and partners from a headquarters perspective.
  • Knowledge of and experience in the Africa region, understanding the local context and dynamics.
  • Familiarity with working in international aid and child-focused organizations.

Terms and Conditions

The successful candidate will be employed according to the terms of the Collective Agreement between Red Barnet and the relevant unions. The position follows Save the Children Denmark’s employment terms and salary structure.

  • Working Hours: Full-time (37 hours per week).
  • Travel Requirements: Travel activities are expected to be around two weeks annually.
  • Flexible Work Options: Save the Children Denmark promotes a flexible work environment. Employees can work from home, as agreed upon with their manager, and enjoy benefits such as flextime and an individual option plan for additional paid time off or pension contributions.
  • Sick Leave: Employees are entitled to paid leave for the child’s first and second day of sick leave.
