Breakthrough T1D is pleased to announce the launch of its Postdoctoral Fellowship Program for 2025, aimed at supporting early-career scientists in the field of type 1 diabetes (T1D) research. This initiative seeks to foster the development of promising researchers by providing them with the resources and mentorship necessary to advance their careers and contribute to groundbreaking discoveries in T1D.
Eligibility Criteria:
To be eligible for the Breakthrough T1D Postdoctoral Fellowship, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Educational Qualifications: Possess a doctoral degree (PhD, MD, DMD, DVM, or equivalent) from an accredited institution.
- Career Stage: Applicants should be in the early stages of their postdoctoral career, with the most recent doctoral degree awarded no more than five years prior to the application submission.
- Commitment: Fellows must dedicate a minimum of 75% of their professional effort to the proposed research project.
- Institutional Affiliation: Research may be conducted at eligible institutions, including universities, hospitals, and research organizations, both domestic and international.
- Research Focus: Proposed projects must be directly related to type 1 diabetes research.
Award Details:
The Breakthrough T1D Postdoctoral Fellowship offers the following support:
- Duration: Three years, contingent upon satisfactory progress.
- Annual Stipend: The stipend amount is determined based on the applicant’s years of relevant postdoctoral experience at the time of award activation.
- Research Allowance: An annual allowance of $5,500 is provided to support activities such as travel to scientific meetings (up to $2,000/year), journal subscriptions, books, and training courses. Note that these funds cannot be used for laboratory supplies or equipment.
- Equipment Purchase: In the first year of the fellowship, fellows may use the research allowance to purchase a personal computer, up to a maximum of $2,000.

Interested applicants should prepare the following materials:
- Research Proposal: A detailed description of the proposed research project, including objectives, methodology, and expected outcomes.
- Mentorship Plan: A statement outlining the mentorship and training environment provided by the sponsoring institution.
- Curriculum Vitae: An up-to-date CV highlighting academic achievements, publications, and relevant experience.
- Institutional Support: A letter from the sponsoring institution confirming the availability of necessary resources and facilities.
- Supervisor’s Commitment: A letter from the proposed research supervisor indicating their willingness to mentor the fellow and support the proposed project.

Additional Information:
- No Citizenship Requirement: There are no citizenship restrictions for this fellowship program.
- Flexibility for Career Interruptions: Breakthrough T1D recognizes that personal circumstances, such as parental leave or health issues, may impact career trajectories. Applicants affected by such circumstances are encouraged to apply and may request flexibility in eligibility criteria.
