University of Edinburgh is offering Commonwealth Distance Learning Scholarships 2025

University of Edinburgh – Digital Education MSc

We are delighted to announce that the Digital Education MSc at the University of Edinburgh has been awarded Commonwealth Distance Learning Scholarships for students beginning in September 2025.

These prestigious scholarships are funded by the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (CSC) in the UK, which offers educational opportunities to citizens across the Commonwealth. Designed to support distance learners, these scholarships provide access to high-quality education without the need to relocate.

About the Programme – MSc in Digital Education

The MSc in Digital Education aims to develop future leaders, innovators, and change-makers in the field of digital education and EdTech. Our programme prepares professionals to:

  • Design, implement, and manage digital learning solutions
  • Develop education technologies and frameworks tailored to local and global needs
  • Foster inclusive, equitable, and socially just digital education practices

We embrace a broad definition of innovation and entrepreneurship — from classroom-level changes to national policy interventions, and from start-ups to large-scale digital solutions. Whether your goal is to improve digital learning in rural schools, build local EdTech solutions, develop equitable policy, or address algorithmic bias in education systems, this programme will equip you with the knowledge, skills, and global networks to succeed.

Who Should Apply?

We welcome applications from individuals working across the education and development ecosystem, including:

  • Teachers and Educators
  • Policymakers
  • Learning Technologists
  • EdTech Entrepreneurs and Innovators
  • NGO and Think Tank Professionals
  • Investors and Project Managers in Education Sectors

You do not need to be a technologist or entrepreneur to apply. If you are passionate about using technology responsibly to improve education in your country or region, this opportunity is for you.

We especially encourage applicants from the following eligible Commonwealth countries:
India, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Malaysia, Mozambique, Nigeria, Pakistan, Rwanda, South Africa, Tanzania, and Zambia.

Our Mission and Rationale

Digital and online learning has the power to transform education in low- and middle-income countries, yet investment, innovation, and policy often remain centered in high-income regions. This scholarship initiative aims to:

  • Bridge the digital divide by empowering local leaders and innovators
  • Promote locally relevant solutions, rather than relying solely on imported technologies
  • Foster capacity-building to manage, evaluate, and govern education technologies effectively

Our MSc programme works closely with Ministries of Education in countries such as Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, and South Africa, as well as universities and NGOs across East and Southern Africa. We are proud to contribute to inclusive education, gender equality, and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Selection Criteria

Selection will be based on the following:

  • Academic merit
  • Alignment with CSC development themes and SDGs
  • Potential for development impact in the applicant’s home country
  • Demonstrated leadership and innovation capacity

Applicants must clearly articulate how they will apply their learning from the MSc to contribute to positive change, whether in classrooms, institutions, communities, or national systems. Example focus areas may include:

  • Expanding access to education in underserved areas
  • Reducing bias and inequality in digital platforms
  • Developing inclusive and ethical AI in education
  • Enhancing national policy frameworks for EdTech
