About the “We Can Work” Program

We Can Work (WCW) is Light for the World’s flagship program designed to create dignified employment opportunities for young people with disabilities. With an ambitious goal to impact over 1 million young women and men across Africa, WCW provides inclusive training, support, and advocacy to ensure that youth with disabilities can enter and succeed in the world of work.

Internship Overview

We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Program Intern to support the We Can Work Academy in Kenya. This is a hands-on internship offering exposure to inclusive program delivery, logistics, stakeholder coordination, and data management.

As an intern, you will work closely with the WCW Program Officer and other team members to ensure successful planning and implementation of academy tracks, while gaining practical experience in disability-inclusive development.

Key Responsibilities

1. Program Coordination & Support

  • Assist in organizing logistics for WCW Academy sessions including venues, materials, and reasonable accommodation for participants with disabilities.
  • Track and report on participant attendance, feedback, and overall engagement.
  • Help schedule and support sessions delivered by trainers, partners, and disability inclusion experts.
  • Contribute to the planning of engagement events with alumni, community leaders, and stakeholders.

2. Documentation & Reporting

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of program activities, including meeting notes, attendance sheets, and financial reimbursements.
  • Assist in drafting internal updates and program reports for submission to the Program Officer and the MERLA (Monitoring, Evaluation, Research, Learning & Accountability) team.

3. Monitoring & Evaluation

  • Support pre- and post-training assessments to measure learning outcomes.
  • Help with data entry and updates to the participant database.
  • Follow up with participants to address emerging needs or challenges.

4. Partnership & Communication

  • Liaise with partner organizations, trainers, and service providers for smooth program delivery.
  • Assist in coordinating communications with participants, caregivers, and relevant community stakeholders.
  • Represent the WCW team in meetings and events as needed.

Learning Opportunities

  • Gain hands-on experience in program coordination and inclusive development.
  • Learn how to design and deliver programs that are accessible to people with disabilities.
  • Develop professional skills in teamwork, communication, documentation, and stakeholder engagement.
  • Deepen your understanding of disability rights, youth empowerment, and inclusive practices.

Required Qualifications & Skills

  • Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in Development Studies, Social Sciences, Education, or related fields.
  • Passion for disability inclusion, youth development, and community engagement.
  • Strong communication skills—both written and spoken.
  • Organized, proactive, and able to manage time and responsibilities efficiently.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Willingness to learn and contribute in a collaborative environment.
  • Experience in volunteering, student leadership, or community work is an added advantage.

Additional Requirements

  • Must be based in or willing to work in Nairobi, Kenya.
  • Willingness to travel within Kenya if required.
