Founded in 1992, Equality Now is an international human rights organization dedicated to advocating for the protection and promotion of the rights of all women and girls worldwide. Through a combination of regional partnerships, community mobilization, and legal advocacy, the organization works to encourage governments to adopt, improve, and enforce laws that protect and promote women and girls’ rights around the world.
Equality Now’s four main issue areas are ending sexual violence, ending harmful practices such as child marriage and female genital mutilation, ending sexual exploitation including the trafficking of women and girls, and ending discrimination in law, including the passage of the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) in the United States.
Position Overview
The Program Officer, Digital Rights, plays a critical role in advancing Equality Now’s mission to protect and promote the rights of women and girls in digital spaces. As part of the Be Net Positive campaign, this role supports the delivery of strategic initiatives aimed at:
- Ending Technology-Facilitated Gender-Based Violence (TFGBV) and Online Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (OSEA)
- Securing digital rights through the Alliance for Universal Digital Rights (AUDRi)
- Advancing research and advocacy to combat online misogyny and harmful digital practices
Key Responsibilities
Campaign Implementation & Leadership
- Contribute to the successful achievement of campaign outcomes aligned with the Theory of Change (ToC).
- Manage assigned grant deliverables, ensuring timely, high-quality outputs within scope and budget.
- Collaborate with the Global Lead and Impact Team to track, document, and share learning across interventions.
- Develop thought leadership around core areas of work, collaborating with the AUDRi Coordinator and Communications Team.
Advocacy & Legal Strategy
- Support context mapping and stakeholder analysis for the digital rights space in collaboration with the Global Lead and AUDRi Coordinator.
- Strengthen relationships with allies, civil society organizations, and key influencers at local, national, and international levels.
- Contribute to the development of clear and accountable partnerships aligned with shared advocacy goals.
- Prepare and submit legal documentation to international and regional human rights bodies.
- Provide legal analysis and expertise on digital rights frameworks, with a preference for EU law experience.
- Contribute to legal case development and documentation
Success Measures
- Demonstrated contribution to the Be Net Positive campaign’s goals across all four ToC pathways.
- High-quality, timely, and evidence-based reporting on grant deliverables and activities.
- Development of legal and strategic insights that strengthen Equality Now’s digital rights advocacy.
- Strong, respectful partnerships with clearly defined shared objectives and roles.
Qualifications, Skills, and Experience
Substantive Knowledge
- Strong knowledge of gender equality, systemic discrimination, and how these intersect with other forms of oppression (e.g., race, class, disability, sexual orientation).
- Deep understanding of international and regional legal frameworks, including human rights treaties, digital rights protections, and standards governing online harms.
- Familiarity with advocacy in an international NGO or legal context, especially relating to women’s rights or technology-facilitated gender-based violence.
Communications Skills
- Excellent legal research and analytical writing skills, with the ability to translate complex legal concepts into accessible language for advocacy, reports, and submissions.
- Experience preparing advocacy communications, including letters to decision-makers, public statements, and legal submissions.
- Comfortable engaging with diverse audiences, including community groups, policymakers, human rights bodies, and media.
- Fluency in English is required; Spanish fluency is a strong advantage.
Execution Skills
- Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in program delivery, legal advocacy, or campaign implementation.
- Demonstrated ability to manage projects, track deliverables, and meet deadlines while working independently and collaboratively across global teams.
- Skilled at partnership management and engaging stakeholders in mutual accountability, especially in cross-cultural environments.
Targeted Specialized Knowledge
- Law degree (LLB, JD, or equivalent) with a focus on human rights, digital rights, or technology law.
- Experience with EU legal frameworks related to digital rights, privacy, and online safety is highly desirable.
- Prior engagement with international human rights mechanisms (e.g., UN treaty bodies, regional courts, special procedures).
- Familiarity with the technology-facilitated GBV landscape and the legal, social, and advocacy strategies for addressing online harms.
