The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is seeking a Project Coordinator for a climate resilience initiative in Harare, Zimbabwe. This full-time position is offered under the National Personnel Service Agreement (NPSA-10) for a one-year contract, with the possibility of extension. The application deadline is May 14, 2025.

Project Overview

In partnership with the Japanese Embassy, UNDP is supporting the Government of Zimbabwe to enhance resilience in the aftermath of the 2023–2024 El Niño-induced drought. The project focuses on Chivi and Mwenezi districts, aiming to:

• Increase production of drought-resistant grains and resilient crops to improve food security.
• Deploy innovative crop protection technologies to combat red-billed quelea bird infestations.
• Enhance soil water retention and crop nutrition to boost yields during dry spells.
• Promote climate-smart agriculture and support community-driven resilience initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

Project Administration & Coordination

• Oversee the subcontracted NGO (Responsible Party) to ensure efficient and effective project implementation.
• Ensure adherence to project objectives, timelines, and quality standards.
• Provide technical and managerial support as needed.
• Facilitate communication between UNDP, Responsible and Implementing partners.
• Work closely with the Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water, and Rural Development to ensure alignment with national policies and strategies.

Financial Management

• Monitor project budgets and ensure compliance with financial regulations.
• Oversee financial reporting and liaise with finance teams.
• Ensure efficient resource allocation and financial accountability.
• Support financial tracking for the implementing NGO and other partners.

Technical Guidance

• Provide technical guidance on project activities related to climate resilience and food security, especially the SHEP Approach aimed at Market-Oriented Agriculture.
• Ensure the integration of climate-smart agricultural practices and sustainable farming techniques.
• Oversee the adoption of innovative crop protection and soil enhancement techniques.
• Collaborate with the Ministry to implement best practices and policy recommendations.

Monitoring & Evaluation (M&E), Reporting & Knowledge Sharing

• Work closely with the M&E Officer to track progress and impact.
• Develop progress reports, presentations, and documentation for stakeholders.
• Ensure alignment with UNDP’s reporting requirements and national development frameworks.
• Develop and implement a communications strategy to share project outcomes with stakeholders, donors, and the public.
• Prepare success stories, policy briefs, and newsletters to highlight key achievements and lessons learned.
• Ensure visibility of project activities through media engagement, social media updates, and public outreach campaigns.

Stakeholder Engagement & Coordination

• Foster strong relationships with government entities, particularly the Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water, and Rural Development.
• Engage with local authorities, community leaders, and farmer groups to ensure inclusive participation.
• Actively engage in stakeholder meetings, workshops, and policy dialogues.
• Facilitate Project Steering Committee Meetings to review project progress and key performance indicators.

Required Qualifications

• Education: Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in Agricultural Management, Agricultural Economics, Finance, or a closely related field. A first-level university degree (bachelor’s degree) in the areas stated above, in combination with an additional two years of qualifying experience, will be given due consideration in lieu of the advanced university degree.
• Experience: Minimum of 5 years (with master’s degree) or 7 years (with bachelor’s degree) of relevant experience, preferably in the implementation of environment/biodiversity/natural resources management projects.
• Skills:
  • Demonstrated experience in supervising and leading teams.
  • Experience in the usage of computers and office software packages, experience in handling web-based management systems.
  • Proven track record of sound knowledge in environmental or biodiversity-related policies.
  • Experience in supervising technical assessments, reports, and technical documents.
  • Experience in budget formulation, review, and implementation at the project level.
  • Prior experience with UNDP projects would be an asset.
• Languages: Fluency in English and Shona or Ndebele is required.

Compensation & Benefits

The estimated salary for a Project Coordinator in Harare is approximately ZWL 50,440 per month, based on available data. Additional benefits may include health insurance, annual leave, and professional development opportunities.
