Rutgers is seeking a skilled and experienced International Communications Consultant to support its international communications efforts from mid-May to mid-September 2025. This consultant will play a crucial role in refining and enhancing Rutgers’ international communications approach, ensuring alignment with its evolving brand narrative and strategic objectives. The consultant will work closely with key internal teams and contribute to the success of several international programs, including Right Here Right Now, Generation G, Power to You(th), and She Makes Her Safe Choice.

As Rutgers’ international programs evolve, particularly in digital communications, this consultancy will focus on enhancing digital engagement and sharpening messaging, while supporting internal alignment with the organization’s overall brand direction. This position offers an exciting opportunity to help lay the foundation for a more streamlined, consistent, and future-ready communications approach.

Background and Context

Rutgers is committed to strengthening its global brand identity through its international work. With an emphasis on key programs like Right Here Right Now, Generation G, Power to You(th), and She Makes Her Safe Choice, the organization aims to align its international communications with its broader brand strategy. The consultant will help ensure that Rutgers’ messaging reflects its values, expertise, and vision consistently across various platforms and audiences.

In response to a leaner communications capacity within its international portfolio, Rutgers needs communications that are strategic, well-crafted, and reflective of its core positioning. Even with a reduced programmatic footprint, maintaining a strong international presence remains essential for advancing Rutgers’ mission and reinforcing its identity as a global leader in sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), particularly focusing on youth.

Goal

The overarching goal of this consultancy is to assess and enhance the effectiveness of Rutgers’ digital and international communications. The consultant will provide strategic recommendations, sharpen brand messaging, and ensure that international communications align with the organization’s vision, values, and evolving SRHR landscape.

Scope of Work

The International Communications Consultant will collaborate with Rutgers’ internal stakeholders, including the international communications team, national communications teams, content teams (webmaster, social media), and external partners. Key responsibilities will include:

  • Assessing Current International Digital Communications:
    • Review current digital content, channels, processes, and messaging related to international communications, aligning with national communications and global programs.
    • Evaluate the effectiveness of digital strategies, including social media, website presence, and digital campaigns.
    • Identify areas of improvement and alignment with the broader Rutgers brand strategy.
  • Developing Strategic Recommendations:
    • Offer recommendations to strengthen the alignment of international communications with Rutgers’ evolving brand strategy.
    • Provide advice on messaging and framing to position Rutgers as a global leader in SRHR.
    • Suggest ways to streamline and integrate international communications across platforms and teams.
  • Supporting Digital Content Strategy:
    • Collaborate on the creation of a robust digital content strategy to engage international stakeholders and audiences effectively.
    • Ensure digital content is consistent with Rutgers’ values, brand, and strategic goals.
    • Support social media and content teams in maintaining consistency in tone, messaging, and visuals.
  • Internal Engagement:
    • Ensure that international programs are integrated into and reflected in Rutgers’ overall communications strategy.
  • Monitoring and Reporting:
    • Provide insights based on feedback and data to refine communications strategies continually.
    • Develop a framework for monitoring and measuring the impact of international digital communications efforts.
  • Implementation Support:
    • Assist in the rollout of the communications roadmap, supporting internal teams in adopting new strategies and ensuring alignment with the brand vision.

Deliverables

By the end of the consultancy, the consultant is expected to deliver:

  1. Assessment Report:
    • A comprehensive evaluation of current international communications, identifying gaps with the brand strategy.
  2. Strategic Recommendations and Implementation Roadmap:
    • A set of actionable recommendations for enhancing alignment, strengthening digital engagement, and improving overall international communications strategies.
  3. Digital Content Strategy:
    • A new digital strategy that includes key messaging, content pillars, and platform recommendations.
  4. Implementation Support:
    • Hands-on support in implementing the communications roadmap, assisting internal teams in integrating strategic recommendations.
  5. Monitoring and Reporting Framework:
    • A framework for tracking and measuring the impact of digital communications, including key performance indicators (KPIs).

Profile

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Expertise in SRHR: A solid understanding of international SRHR trends and dynamics, with the ability to craft clear, compelling narratives for diverse global audiences.
  • Digital Communications Expertise: Proven experience in strategic messaging, content strategy, digital storytelling, and audience engagement in digital environments.
  • Brand Alignment Skills: Experience aligning communications strategies across multiple platforms and teams, ensuring consistent messaging and positioning.
  • Cross-Cultural Competence: The ability to navigate complex organizational structures and collaborate effectively with colleagues in different regions and departments.

The consultant should be hands-on, flexible, and able to provide both strategic insights and practical support.
