Position Overview
The Rockefeller Foundation (RF) is a global leader in philanthropy, focusing on transformative solutions that promote human well-being and address the climate crisis. Despite global efforts to expand energy access, over 1 billion people still lack reliable and sufficient energy, hindering their ability to realize economic opportunities.
The Rockefeller Foundation is addressing this gap through key initiatives, most notably the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP). GEAPP, established with a diverse coalition of partners, aims to deliver universal energy access, end energy poverty, and support a just energy transition in Asia, Latin America, and Africa. The Foundation also works on projects that scale clean energy, promote energy justice, and enable the integration of frontier technologies like AI and grid digitization.
As part of our expanding efforts, we are seeking a Senior Associate, Power to support our clean energy initiatives, drive strategy implementation, and collaborate on major projects across our energy portfolio. This individual will play a key role in accelerating the Foundation’s efforts to improve energy access, enhance energy ecosystems, and support the transition to renewable energy across developing countries.
Key Responsibilities
The Senior Associate, Power will:
- Support Major Projects: Contribute directly to large-scale energy projects, including the mini-grid scale-up project in Zambia, the implementation of GEAPP grants, and regional efforts like Mission 300, which aims to electrify 300 million Africans by 2030.
- Research & Strategy Development: Conduct in-depth research, landscape analysis, and develop strategic concepts to guide RF’s energy portfolio. Provide critical support in designing proposals and executing key initiatives.
- Grant & Project Management: Oversee day-to-day project management, including supporting grantees and contractors, ensuring project deliverables contribute to impactful outcomes. Provide coordination and execution support for RF’s energy initiatives.
- Collaborative Leadership: Work alongside the team’s Managing Directors to develop and execute strategies that align with the Foundation’s broader goals, particularly in driving energy transitions and energy access in developing countries.
Qualifications & Experience
The ideal candidate will bring the following qualifications and skills:
- Experience: At least 5 years of relevant experience in the energy sector, with a focus on renewable energy, energy policy, energy access, or energy transitions. Experience in global contexts, particularly in Asia, Africa, or Latin America, is highly valued.
- Sector Knowledge: Proven understanding of energy systems, clean energy solutions, and energy access challenges. A background in technology, research, policy, or investment is desirable.
- Project Management: Strong experience managing complex projects in an international, multi-stakeholder environment. The ability to drive results with a solution-oriented, highly responsive approach.
- Communication Skills: Excellent writing and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical concepts in a clear and accessible way.
- Independent & Collaborative: Ability to work autonomously, take initiative, and collaborate effectively within a team-oriented, matrixed environment.
- Educational Background: A Bachelor’s degree is required. Master’s degree or equivalent experience is a plus.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite is required. Experience with Salesforce or other project management tools is an asset.
- Commitment to Impact: A strong commitment to social impact and improving the lives of underserved communities globally.
- Travel Flexibility: Ability to travel domestically and internationally to support initiatives.
