Application Timeline

  • Embassy Recommendation: Applications generally open between April and May 2025. The Japanese embassy or consulate in your home country conducts the initial screening, including written exams and interviews. Final results are usually announced by July 2025.
  • University Recommendation: This process is initiated by Japanese universities that have agreements with overseas institutions. Interested candidates should contact their prospective academic advisor to discuss potential nomination. The university’s internal selection and nomination to MEXT typically occur between November 2024 and February 2025, with final results by June 2025.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Undergraduate Applicants: Must be between 17 and 25 years old and have completed 12 years of schooling.
  • Research Students (Master’s and PhD): Must be under 35 years old. Master’s applicants should have a bachelor’s degree, while PhD applicants should hold a master’s degree.
  • Specialized Training College Students: Must be between 17 and 25 years old and have completed 12 years of schooling.
  • Japanese Studies Students: Must be between 18 and 30 years old and be enrolled in a university outside Japan that majors in Japanese language or culture.

Scholarship Benefits

  • Monthly Stipend:
    • Undergraduate students: ¥117,000
    • Research students: ¥143,000–¥145,000
  • Tuition: Full exemption from tuition fees.
  • Travel Expenses: Round-trip airfare between your home country and Japan.
  • Accommodation: Assistance in securing housing, with some universities providing residence halls.

Application Process

  1. Embassy Recommendation:
    • Contact the Japanese embassy or consulate in your country to obtain the application guidelines and forms.
    • Submit the completed forms along with required documents, such as academic transcripts, letters of recommendation, and a study plan.
    • Prepare for and attend the written examination and interview as scheduled by the embassy.
  2. University Recommendation:
