Research Manager Consultant Vacancy: Lead Social Research for Impact

Location: Nairobi, Remote | Reports To: Research Director

Overview

A leading Research and Consulting Firm is seeking an experienced Research Manager Consultant to lead complex social research projects, provide strategic advisory services, and deliver actionable insights that drive social impact and inform policy decisions.

The ideal candidate will manage a diverse portfolio of consulting engagements, oversee research teams, and collaborate with a variety of stakeholders, including government agencies, nonprofits, and community organizations.

This role demands a deep understanding of social research methodologies, expertise in both qualitative and quantitative research designs, strong consulting skills, and a passion for addressing societal challenges.

Key Responsibilities

Research Design & Execution

  • Lead the development and execution of social research projects using both qualitative and quantitative methodologies such as surveys, focus groups, ethnographic studies, and statistical analysis.
  • Address societal issues through rigorous research and deliver findings that inform policy, programs, and initiatives.

Client Consulting

  • Partner with clients to define project objectives, scope research needs, and ensure that deliverables meet their specific requirements.
  • Provide evidence-based recommendations that address social challenges or policy questions, offering expert advisory services to a diverse range of clients.

Team Leadership

  • Manage and mentor a team of researchers and analysts, ensuring high-quality deliverables while fostering a culture of collaboration and innovation within the team.
  • Provide guidance and oversight to junior team members, helping them grow professionally while maintaining research excellence.

Project Management

  • Oversee multiple consulting engagements simultaneously, managing timelines, budgets, and client expectations.
  • Ensure rigorous research standards are met, with expertise in project budgeting and forecasting being an added advantage.

Insight Delivery

  • Translate complex research findings into clear, actionable insights through comprehensive reports, presentations, and workshops.
  • Tailor insights to diverse audiences such as policymakers, community leaders, and funders, ensuring the results are accessible and impactful.

Stakeholder Collaboration

  • Engage with clients, community stakeholders, and subject matter experts to validate findings and ensure research aligns with real-world needs.
  • Act as a liaison between stakeholders, ensuring that feedback is incorporated into the research process.

Thought Leadership

  • Contribute to the firm’s reputation by authoring articles, speaking at industry events, or developing tools that advance the social research field.
  • Share expertise to shape discussions on social research and enhance the firm’s thought leadership in the sector.

Impact Evaluation

  • Design and conduct evaluations to measure the social impact of programs, policies, or interventions, helping clients assess the effectiveness of their efforts.

Qualifications

Education

  • A Bachelor’s degree in a social science field (e.g., Sociology, Anthropology, Public Policy, Psychology, or a related discipline).
  • A Master’s degree in a relevant field is highly preferred.

Experience

  • A minimum of 6-8 years of experience in social research, consulting, or advisory roles, with at least 3 years in a leadership or client-facing capacity.

Skills

  • Expertise in a variety of social research methods, including qualitative interviews, participatory research, longitudinal studies, and statistical modeling.
  • Proficiency in research tools and software such as NVivo, Stata, SPSS, R, or similar tools, with knowledge of data visualization platforms like Tableau.
  • Strong consulting skills, including client relationship management, needs assessment, and solution development.
  • Exceptional communication skills with the ability to present complex findings to non-technical audiences effectively.
  • Proven ability to manage teams and meet deadlines while delivering high-quality projects.

Knowledge

  • A deep understanding of key social issues such as education, healthcare equity, poverty, climate justice, and familiarity with policy analysis or program evaluation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience consulting for government bodies, international NGOs, or social impact organizations.
  • Proven experience managing large field teams in diverse cultural contexts.
  • Advanced skills in mixed-methods research or statistical techniques like regression analysis and causal inference.
  • Excellent report-writing and presentation skills.
  • Familiarity with emerging trends in social research, including digital ethnography and AI-driven social analytics.
