About the Position
Global Energy Monitor (GEM) is seeking a Research Analyst for its Renewables and Other Power Program, a remote position focused on enhancing global data coverage for small-scale solar installations under 1 Megawatt (MW).
The role will involve designing and implementing geospatial methodologies, harmonizing datasets across solar project sizes, and streamlining workflows to improve data quality for GEM’s Global Solar Power Tracker. The successful candidate will also contribute to the development of best practices and automation approaches to enhance GEM’s broader suite of energy trackers.

Key Responsibilities
- Data Collection & Analysis: Organize and analyze data sets for renewable energy sources, focusing on small-scale solar installations (under 1 MW), and track their distribution at the regional, national, and international levels.
- Geospatial Methodology: Design and implement strategies to identify, estimate, and verify the location and scale of solar installations, contributing to the accurate and timely representation of solar power data.
- Code Development & Integration: Maintain and improve Python code to harmonize datasets across various solar project categories, from small-scale installations to those exceeding 20 MW.
- Research & Monitoring: Stay informed about emerging trends in the energy sector, using sources such as industry reports, government data, and media outlets to assess current and future developments.
- Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement: Work with internal teams, including researchers, analysts, and project managers, to ensure consistency in data and analyses. Build strong relationships with external stakeholders, such as NGOs, governments, and academic institutions.
- Reporting & Outreach: Prepare research reports, present data findings, and assist in sharing insights with external partners and the public through GEM platforms.
Required Qualifications
- Experience: A minimum of 3 years in energy, environmental, or decarbonization research, specifically within renewable energy sectors.
- Analytical & Statistical Skills: Proficient in conducting quantitative research using methods like regression modeling, hypothesis testing, and data summarization. Experience with large and complex datasets is essential.
- Technical Proficiency: Strong skills in Python programming for data processing, along with experience in geospatial mapping tools and data analysis platforms.
- Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication abilities, with a track record of producing clear, concise reports and presenting data insights to diverse audiences.
- Collaboration & Project Management: Demonstrated ability to coordinate teams and manage projects effectively, including the ability to meet deadlines and adjust priorities as needed.
- Networking: Ability to establish and maintain relationships with external stakeholders, including policymakers, academics, and media professionals.
Preferred Qualifications
- Sector Knowledge: Familiarity with the environmental and social impacts of energy production, the global energy market, and the political economy surrounding energy materials and generation.
- Research Skills: Exceptional attention to detail and resourcefulness in conducting in-depth research using various online tools and sources.
- Project Management: Experience managing projects, breaking large tasks into actionable timelines, and adjusting priorities based on evolving needs.
- Multilingual: Fluency in Chinese or Spanish is preferred, though not required.
Compensation and Benefits
- Salary: $105,429.26 (for US-based employees) with adjustments for international employees in line with GEM’s transparent compensation framework.
- Benefits:

- Paid Leave: 4 weeks of vacation, 18 holidays, and 15 sick days annually.

- Remote Work: A stipend to support remote work, assistance with home office setup, and ergonomic consultations.
- Sabbatical: 12-week paid sabbatical leave after five years of service.
