About the Position

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is seeking applications for the position of Strategic Communication and Outreach Specialist within its Plant Production and Protection Division (NSP). This is a consultant role based in Rome, Italy, offering a contract duration of up to 11 months, with a possibility of renewal.

As part of the NSP team, the selected candidate will play a pivotal role in enhancing the visibility and impact of the division’s work by leading strategic communication efforts. This position involves collaborating with internal and external stakeholders to develop impactful communication materials and outreach strategies to support FAO’s mission of fostering sustainable agricultural systems globally.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop Communication Products: Lead the creation of strategic communication materials (key messages, brochures, newsletters, reports, and social media posts) to raise the profile of NSP’s work.
  • Strategic Engagement: Identify opportunities to amplify NSP’s work through media channels such as online platforms, social media, TV stations, podcasts, and others.
  • Speech & Presentation Support: Lead the development of speeches and presentations for NSP’s senior leadership, including the Director and Deputy Director.
  • Collaboration with Other Divisions: Work closely with other FAO divisions and decentralized offices to produce high-impact communication tools and materials.
  • Social Media Management: Oversee the divisional input to corporate social media accounts and contribute to developing communication efforts aimed at strengthening NSP’s partnerships and resource mobilization.
  • Media Relations: Respond to media requests and other communication-related inquiries under the guidance of FAO’s Office of Communications (OCC).
  • Ensure Quality and Compliance: Ensure all communication products adhere to FAO standards, policies, and guidelines.

Minimum Requirements

  • Education: Master’s degree in Communication Studies, Journalism, or related fields.
  • Experience: 8 to 10 years of relevant experience in strategic communication, journalism, media engagement, or related fields.
  • Language Skills: Proficiency in English (level C).

Selection Criteria

  • Strategic Communication Expertise: Proven experience in leading strategic communication efforts and producing high-quality written and visual communication materials.
  • Experience with Prominent Organizations: Background in working with prominent international organizations, particularly in a communication or media-related role.
  • Proven Impact: Demonstrated ability to influence through strategic communication and successful media engagement.
  • Multidisciplinary Experience: Experience in diverse geographical locations and areas of work, contributing to communication efforts for international or multi-national organizations.
  • FAO Knowledge: Familiarity with FAO’s policies and programs is considered an asset.
