CASI Postdoctoral Climate Fellowship (2025-26 Academic Year)
The Center for the Advanced Study of India (CASI) and the Department of Anthropology at the University of Pennsylvania are excited to invite applications for a Postdoctoral Fellowship for the 2025-26 academic year.
This fellowship is designed for scholars whose research intersects with critical areas such as environment-society relations, cities and urbanization, and climate change.
Applicants are welcome from diverse disciplinary traditions, especially anthropology, architecture, geography, and urban planning, and we are particularly keen on those who have experience with multimedia production and/or critical cartography (including video, web-based platforms, and GIS).
Key Areas of Research Focus:
We are looking for a scholar whose work delves into topics that are central to contemporary global and regional concerns, such as:
- Environment-society relations
- Urbanization and cities
- Climate change and its impacts
- Enduring inequities related to caste, indigeneity, gender, and sexuality
The fellowship seeks to support early-career scholars whose work brings fresh insights to these fields, with a particular emphasis on the intersections of climate change, society, and equity.
Eligibility Criteria:
- Ph.D. Requirements: Applicants must have received their Ph.D. or equivalent degree, or be on track to complete it by June 30, 2025. The fellowship is intended for early-career scholars, so the Ph.D. must have been conferred in 2022 or later.
- Residency Requirement: Fellows are expected to physically reside in the vicinity of the University of Pennsylvania during the course of the fellowship to fully engage with the intellectual life of the center.
- Research Focus: Scholars from various disciplines—including but not limited to anthropology, geography, architecture, and urban planning—are encouraged to apply, particularly those who have research that intersects with multimedia and critical mapping practices.
Fellowship Details:
The term of the fellowship will be from July 1, 2025, to June 30, 2026, with the possibility of a one-year renewal, contingent upon performance and budgetary approval. The fellowship offers:
- A stipend of $66,300 (subject to proof of Ph.D. completion)
- A $3,500 research fund
- Health insurance coverage
Fellows will have the opportunity to:
- Pursue their own research projects, supported by the resources and intellectual environment at CASI.
- Teach one course per year as part of their appointment.
- Work closely with Professor Nikhil Anand, CASI’s Associate Faculty Director, on his research projects, particularly those related to Stories of Climate Action.
- Propose and potentially receive modest funding for innovative new projects within the scope of the fellowship’s objectives.
