The Role:
ACLED is seeking an Associate Data Scientist to support the team with data science projects, particularly those focused on natural language models. This role will involve collaborating with ACLED’s Data Scientist and Head of Data Science, applying various statistical, machine learning, and natural language processing methods to analyze and improve ACLED’s data.
This position is fully remote, meaning it can be done from anywhere with reliable internet access. Candidates from all countries are welcome to apply, and applicants are asked to provide their salary range for consideration.
Specific Roles and Responsibilities:
The Associate Data Scientist will have the following responsibilities:
- Support in the application of statistical, machine learning, and natural language processing methods to analyze ACLED data.
- Update, monitor, and improve ACLED’s existing machine learning models.
- Adapt large language models for ACLED use cases, including:
- Question-answering
- Translation
- Named entity recognition
- Classification
- Engage in data preparation for analysis or bespoke projects.
- Deploy models and data pipelines on cloud-based platforms.
- Assist with ad hoc data science tasks as needed.
Skills and Competencies:
Required:
- Advanced proficiency in Python and R.
- 2-3 years of professional experience in a data science role.
- A strong analytical background, with experience in statistics and machine learning.
- Proven experience with natural language processing (NLP).
- Critical thinking skills and a high degree of attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and meet deadlines with minimal supervision.
- Flexible and able to collaborate effectively within a remote, global team.
- Willingness to work with a supervisor based in US time zones.
- Fluency in English.
- Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s preferred. However, relevant work or research experience may substitute for a Master’s degree.
Preferred:
- Familiarity with ACLED’s data and methodology.
- A background or professional experience in conflict research, peacebuilding, or international development.
- Familiarity with version control via Git and GitHub.
- Experience with cloud-based computing.
- Knowledge of additional programming languages (e.g., JavaScript or Julia).
- Experience working in a remote work environment.
