Role Summary

As Country Director-Nigeria, you will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of CARE’s operations in Nigeria. You will lead the country office (CO) in delivering high-impact, sustainable programs aligned with CARE’s mission and vision. This role demands a strategic leader who can mobilize resources, drive innovation, and collaborate with key stakeholders to achieve lasting social change.

Key Responsibilities

  • Leadership & Talent Development:
    • Build and nurture a dynamic senior leadership team.
    • Foster a culture of diversity, accountability, and staff well-being.
    • Promote CARE’s core values—Respect, Integrity, Commitment, and Excellence.
  • Strategic Planning & Resource Mobilization:
    • Lead the design and implementation of an ambitious country strategy.
    • Secure funding for innovative programs and ensure financial health for the country office.
  • Program Impact & Innovation:
    • Oversee the development of impactful, gender-sensitive programs addressing the root causes of poverty.
    • Champion monitoring, learning, and adaptation for continuous improvement.
  • External Relations & Advocacy:
    • Build strategic alliances with governments, donors, and civil society.
    • Act as a spokesperson for CARE, driving advocacy for policies promoting social justice.
  • Operational Excellence:
    • Ensure strong governance, risk management, and compliance across all operations.
    • Safeguard staff safety and well-being while ensuring responsible resource stewardship.

What You Bring

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a related field (Master’s preferred).
  • 6–8 years of senior management experience in the development sector, including strategic and operational leadership.

Skills and Competencies

  • Fluency in English and French.
  • Proven ability to lead diverse, cross-cultural teams in complex environments.
  • Expertise in managing complex budgets, ensuring donor compliance, and addressing audit recommendations.
  • Experience in strategic planning and execution.
  • Demonstrated experience in engaging government and donors to influence policy and mobilize resources.
  • Exceptional skills in coaching, capacity building, and conflict resolution.
  • Strong resilience and adaptability in high-pressure settings.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in a related field.
  • 8+ years of experience in a senior management position in the development sector.
  • Demonstrated experience in program design, implementation, and evaluation.
  • Experience managing emergencies.
