What is the ACONA Fellowship?

ACONA offers a prestigious 12-month fellowship program designed for rising security experts. The program blends historical case studies, technological insights, and advanced negotiation training, preparing participants to tackle global security issues.

As a fellow, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of arms control, nuclear issues, and international security while learning negotiation techniques vital to resolving complex global challenges.

At the end of the program, fellows will earn a Certificate in Arms Control Negotiation and become part of a global network of influential alumni working in the field of international security.

Program Highlights

  • Three Week-long Boot Camps: These intensive sessions will sharpen your arms control negotiation skills. You’ll engage in simulations and learn from experienced professionals in the field.
  • ACONA Conference in Reykjavík, Iceland: Travel to Iceland and attend the ACONA Conference where you will have the chance to interact with key global experts and decision-makers.
  • Policy Brief Development: Fellows will collaborate to produce a comprehensive policy brief, addressing pressing arms control and international security issues. This will be a valuable document for your professional portfolio.
  • Meet Distinguished Experts: ACONA brings in top-tier speakers to guide and inspire fellows. Past speakers include prominent figures such as former Icelandic Prime Minister Katrín Jakobsdóttir, former NATO Deputy Secretary General Rose Gottemoeller, and former EU High Representative Catherine Ashton. These experts offer invaluable insight into the world of arms control and international diplomacy.

Fellowship Term

The fellowship will run from July 1, 2025 to June 30, 2026. During this year, fellows will engage in a series of intensive learning experiences, projects, and networking opportunities designed to develop the skills necessary for high-level arms control negotiations.

Eligibility Criteria

The ACONA Fellowship is open to candidates from all nationalities who have a strong professional or academic background in international security. Specifically, applicants should have 3-5 years of advanced professional or research experience in one of the following fields:

  1. Arms control and nuclear issues: Experience in the technical or policy aspects of arms control, nuclear non-proliferation, or disarmament.
  2. Negotiation and mediation: A background in international negotiation, mediation, or conflict resolution, with a focus on arms control or security issues.
  3. International peace, security, and global affairs: Experience in global affairs, particularly in the context of U.S.-Russia-China-EU relations, and a focus on international peace and security.

Interested candidates must submit the following materials as part of the application process:

  • Motivation letter (1-2 pages): In this letter, describe your interest in the ACONA Fellowship, your relevant experience, and how you plan to contribute to the program and the broader field of arms control negotiation.
  • CV/Resume (Max. 5 pages): Highlight your academic background, professional experience, and any other relevant activities or achievements.
  • Recommendation letter: Applicants must provide one letter of recommendation, which should be submitted directly by the recommender.
