The World Inequality Lab (WIL) is seeking a Junior Economist to join its dynamic team for a full-time position starting in either July 2025 or September 2025.
This position offers an exciting opportunity for early-career economists to contribute to the world’s leading research on inequality, while also gaining valuable experience working with a global team of experts in data analysis, economics, and policy.
Position Overview:
The Junior Economist will play an essential role in the central team at WIL, helping to update and manage the macroeconomic and distributional data series published in the World Inequality Database.
This global database is a vital resource for understanding economic inequality and is used by policymakers, researchers, and social scientists around the world. The Junior Economist will work closely with regional coordinators to produce and update global inequality data, synthesizing data from a variety of sources, including surveys, tax data, and national accounts.
The role offers the opportunity to be directly involved in the production of high-quality research that shapes the discourse on inequality worldwide, contributing to critical work that influences global policy decisions.
Key Responsibilities:
The Junior Economist will have the following primary responsibilities:
- Data Management and Analysis:
- Contribute to the updating and management of inequality data within the World Inequality Database. This includes working with macroeconomic and distributional data to ensure its accuracy and consistency.
- Assist in combining and synthesizing various data sources, including tax data, national accounts, and surveys, to create cohesive and reliable global inequality statistics.
- Collaborate with regional coordinators to ensure that regional inequality data is up-to-date and integrated into the global dataset.
- Support for Research and Data Processing:
- Assist with the systematic integration of new data and updates to existing datasets.
- Help in the creation of new data visualizations and tools to improve the accessibility and usability of the World Inequality Database.
- Support the preparation of technical reports and research papers that explore the trends, challenges, and solutions related to global inequality.
- Collaboration and Teamwork:
- Work under the direct supervision of the WIL Co-director and Head of Data, assisting with the overall management and quality control of inequality data.
- Collaborate with team members and external stakeholders to ensure that the data remains coherent and valuable to the wider research community.
- Support the research agenda by helping to produce documentation and summaries that communicate findings from the inequality data.
- Contributing to Global Inequality Research:
- Participate in ongoing discussions about global inequality trends, drawing on the data collected to inform research and policymaking.
- Contribute to the analysis and interpretation of global inequality trends in partnership with WIL’s senior researchers and external collaborators.
Qualifications and Requirements:
The ideal candidate for this position will meet the following qualifications and skills:
- Educational Requirements:
- A Master’s degree (Master 1 or Master 2) in Economics, Development Studies, Social Sciences, or a related field is preferred.
- Candidates with strong academic backgrounds in economics or quantitative research are highly encouraged to apply.
- Professional Experience:
- 0-2 years of professional experience, with a demonstrated interest in inequality research, economics, or data analysis.
- Some experience working with large datasets and research-related tasks is beneficial, although not required.
- Technical Skills:
- Proficiency in Stata is essential for the role, as it will be used for data management and analysis.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, ensuring that data is accurately handled and processed.
- Ability to collaborate effectively on computer code and contribute to technical discussions.
- Communication Skills:
- Proficiency in English, both written and spoken, is required, as this is the primary language of communication at WIL.
- Strong written communication skills to prepare reports, documentation, and contribute to research publications.
- Ability to work collaboratively in an international, multicultural team environment.
- Interest and Passion:
- A passion for understanding and addressing global inequality issues is essential for this role. The Junior Economist will contribute to work that directly influences global inequality research and policy.
