12th ICMPD International Summer School on Migration Takes Place From 29 June to 5 July 2025 in Armenia (Fully-funded): Apply Now!

The International Summer School on Migration is an exciting opportunity for students and young professionals interested in migration studies. Organised as part of the EU-funded project Strengthening Development Impact of Migration in Georgia (STREAMinG 2) and the Prague Process, this programme is run by the International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD).

Scheduled to take place in Armenia from 29 June to 5 July 2025, this one-week event will offer a dynamic blend of academic learning, interactive workshops, and peer engagement, all aimed at enhancing participants’ understanding of migration issues and policies within the EU and its Eastern neighbourhood.

Program Overview

The Summer School’s main objective is to create a platform for rigorous academic exchange and reflection on migration. By bringing together students and young professionals from various disciplines, the programme fosters cross-sector collaboration and interdisciplinary learning.

It is designed to provide participants with the knowledge, skills, and insights necessary to address migration issues in a complex and evolving global context.

The curriculum is research-oriented, multidisciplinary, and innovative, focusing on both theoretical and practical aspects of migration studies.

Participants will gain an understanding of global migration trends, including historical contexts such as transatlantic migration, industrialization, and the effects of colonization. Contemporary migration movements and their socio-economic, political, and environmental impacts will also be examined.
  2. Migration Research Methods
    Participants will be introduced to various research methods used in migration studies, including both quantitative and qualitative approaches. The module will address methodological challenges, ethical issues in migration research, and how to use migration data effectively.
  3. Migration and Development
    This module will delve into the links between migration and development, examining how migration affects sustainable development goals (SDGs), remittances, skilled migration, and diaspora communities. Participants will explore real-life examples and case studies of migration’s impact on economic and social development.
  4. Migration and the Economy
    Participants will explore how migration influences economic factors such as labour markets, poverty, and health. The course will examine the economic effects of emigration and immigration, including the role of remittances in fostering development in migrant-sending countries.
  5. International Migration Law and Human Rights
    This module will focus on the legal aspects of migration, including asylum law, family reunification, and the human rights of migrants, particularly those in irregular migration situations. Participants will gain a detailed understanding of global trends in forced displacement, asylum procedures, and the international legal framework governing migration.
  6. Migration and Media
    This course will examine the media’s role in shaping public perceptions of migrants and migration policies. Participants will analyze the relationship between media coverage, political discourse, and public opinion on migration issues, and the role media plays in influencing policy decisions.

Eligibility and Application Process

The Summer School is open to students and young professionals from diverse backgrounds, particularly those with an interest in migration studies. Applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • Citizenship: Applicants must be citizens of Armenia, Georgia, Moldova, or Ukraine (including those residing in the EU).
  • Academic Background: The programme is designed for students from various fields, including media studies, international law, migration law, human rights, economics, social and political sciences, and migration studies. Young professionals working in migration management or civil society organisations focused on migration issues are also encouraged to apply.
  • English Proficiency: A proficient command of the English language is required. Non-native English speakers should have a proficiency equivalent to a score of 7.00 in IELTS or 570 in TOEFL. While an English language certificate is preferred, it is not mandatory for applicants to submit one if they meet the proficiency criteria through other means.

Funding and Benefits

The Summer School offers full financial support for all participants. This includes full board and lodging throughout the programme. Additionally, travel expenses will be covered and arranged by ICMPD. The programme is fully funded, with no participation fees required.
