About IGAD

The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) is a regional economic community (REC) comprising Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, and Uganda.

Originally established in 1986 as the Intergovernmental Authority on Drought and Development (IGADD), IGAD was restructured in 1996 to expand its focus beyond drought response to include peacebuilding, economic integration, and sustainable development.

Headquartered in Djibouti, IGAD is driven by a vision to foster a resilient, peaceful, prosperous, and integrated region, where citizens enjoy enhanced quality of life through inclusive and transformative development. The organization’s mission is to promote regional cooperation and integration to bolster the efforts of Member States in achieving peace, stability, and socio-economic progress.

Purpose of the Internship

Programme As part of its commitment to regional capacity building, gender equality, and youth empowerment, IGAD is offering internship placements across its programmes with support from the Government of Japan.

This initiative is designed to provide emerging professionals with an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in regional institutions, build leadership capacity, and contribute to IGAD’s mission through gender-mainstreamed development programs.

Through this internship, participants will receive exposure to regional dynamics, acquire professional skills in their respective fields, and participate in activities that enhance cross-cultural understanding and regional integration.

Internship Overview

The 2025 IGAD Internship Programme will select 14 interns (two from each IGAD Member State) for strategic placements across various IGAD divisions and programmes.

Interns will be placed within their home countries, hosted at IGAD offices or relevant partner institutions, depending on their academic backgrounds and areas of interest.Interns will engage in a variety of tasks, from program implementation to gender mainstreaming initiatives, supporting IGAD’s commitment to inclusive development across sectors such as peace and security, health, agriculture, environment, and more.

Eligibility Criteria

Academic Qualifications

  • Must have at least a Bachelor’s degree or be enrolled in a Master’s program, with the intention to return to school after the internship.
  • Applicants should not have more than two years of professional experience post-graduation from a second (Master’s) degree.

Age

  • Applicants must be between the ages of 21 and 27 at the start of the internship.

Nationality

  • Must be a citizen of an IGAD Member State (Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, or Uganda).

Language Proficiency

  • Fluency in English is mandatory.
  • Knowledge of French is an added advantage.

Skills and Attributes

  • Ability to work in a multicultural and international environment.
  • Strong communication skills and proficiency in standard computer applications (MS Office, email, etc.)
  • Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and capable of working independently on assigned tasks.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • During the internship period, interns will:
    • Provide support to program implementation and gender mainstreaming in the division where they are assigned.
    • Assist with day-to-day project activities, administrative tasks, and research.
    • Participate in meetings and events contributing innovative ideas to enhance program impact.
    • Submit a comprehensive internship report at the end of the placement.Interns will work under the supervision of a designated Project Manager, in close collaboration with the IGAD Gender Office, ensuring mentorship and performance evaluation throughout the internship.

Remuneration

Please note that no salary or stipend will be provided during the internship. However, interns will benefit from access to training materials, mentorship, and professional development opportunities provided by IGAD.
