Summary:

The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented intern to join its Africa Program for the summer of 2025. This non-profit, bipartisan public policy organization, established in 1962, is committed to providing strategic insights and policy solutions to global decision-makers focused on security and prosperity. CSIS has grown to be one of the largest organizations of its kind, with a diverse team dedicated to addressing global security dynamics.

The Africa Program works to engage various stakeholders in addressing strategic challenges and opportunities across sub-Saharan Africa, focusing on governance, security, economic development, and foreign relations. The selected intern will play a key role in supporting the program’s efforts to raise awareness of its work through social media and podcast activities, assist with research, and contribute to the preparation of materials for high-profile events and publications.

Key Responsibilities:

As an intern with the Africa Program, your primary tasks will include, but are not limited to:

  • Social Media Management: Regularly publicize the program’s publications and events using platforms like Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook to raise visibility and engage with the public.
  • Podcast Support: Aid in editing and publicizing the bi-weekly Into Africa podcast series, helping to promote discussions on Africa-related issues.
  • Creative Content Creation: Innovate new ways to enhance the program’s social media presence, including creating and distributing email mailings using Pardot.
  • Research Assistance: Provide research support to the Africa Program staff, assisting in the compilation of literature reviews, summaries, backgrounders, and other publications that contribute to the program’s research portfolio.
  • Event Support: Assist in event planning and coordination by drafting invitation letters, conducting background research, preparing questions for speakers, and helping with event logistics.
  • Administrative Support: Perform various administrative tasks as needed, ensuring smooth operations of the program’s activities.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will meet the following requirements:

  • Education: A Bachelor’s degree (completed or in progress) in African Studies, Political Science, International Relations, History, Public Policy, International Development, or related fields is preferred.
  • Experience:
    • Experience managing social media platforms (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram) in a professional setting is required.
    • Proficiency in using Canva for graphic design is required.
    • Strong skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) are essential.
    • Demonstrated ability to create, edit, and produce high-quality written materials, such as analytical reports and policy briefs.
  • Skills:
    • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
    • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
    • A strong understanding or interest in African political, economic, and security issues, particularly in relation to Africa-U.S. policy, is preferred.
    • Ability to engage and respond to individuals from diverse backgrounds and perspectives.
  • Eligibility:
    • Must be eligible to work in the United States.
    • Must commit to a full-time internship (35 hours/week) from mid-June to early September 2025.

Compensation:

This Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) internship position offers an hourly wage based on the candidate’s experience:

  • $17.50/hour for current undergraduate students.
  • $18.50/hour for candidates with a bachelor’s degree.
  • $19.50/hour for candidates with a master’s degree.

Physical Requirements:

This Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) position requires typical office work in a moderate noise environment. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential job functions.
